Cartago, Costa Rica is a city rich in history and culture. The city was actually the first Spanish settlement in Costa Rica, founded in 1563 by Juan Vasquez de Coronado. Cartago was actually the capital of Costa Rica until the capital was changed to San Jose in 1823.

The weather in Cartago is considered by many to be among the most comfortable climates in the world. The city and surrounding communities are home to many retirees that came to enjoy the nearly perfect weather conditions.

Both Turrialba Volcano and Irazu Volcano are among the 7 active volcanoes in Costa Rica. These volcanoes are located within a short, scenic drive of Cartago. Other area attractions include Pre-Columbian ruins at Monumento Nacional Guayabo and the Basilica de Nuestra Senora de Los Angeles Church which houses the Black Madonna statue. This statue is thought by many Costa Ricans to have miraculous healing powers.
