Costa Rica Provinces |
Costa Rica is divided into seven provinces. The provinces of Costa Rica are Alajuela, Cartago, Guanacaste, Heredia, Limon, Puntarenas and San Jose. Each Costa Rica province has unique characteristics as Costa Rica actually has 12 distinct climate and life zones.

Guanacaste Province
Guanacaste is located in the northwest corner of Costa Rica. This province is not only home to Rincon de la Vieja Volcano, but also some of Costa Rica's best beaches. |
Limon Province
Limon is located on Costa Rica's east coast
bordering the Caribbean Sea. Limon is home
to one of Costa Rica's largest shipping ports
as well as Tortuguero National Park. |
Puntarenas Province
Puntarenas is Costa Rica's largest province. It stretches from Panama to Monteverde. This province also extends to the southern Nicoya Peninsula. |
San Jose Province
The San Jose Province is located centrally in
Costa Rica. Named after the city, San Jose
hosts Costa Rica's capitol city, similarly
named. |
Alajuela Province
The province of Alajuela is located in the Northern Plains of Costa Rica. This province stretches from the Central Valley to Nicaragua. |
Heredia Province
The province of Heredia is located in the
eastern side of Costa Rica's Northern Plains.
This is one of Costa Rica's least explored
provinces. |
Cartago Province
The province of Cartago is located to the south and west of the captol city San Jose. Much of this province is encompassed by La Amistad International Park. |
