Poas Volcano and national park is located in Costa Rica's Central Valley near the city of Alajuela, in the Alajuela Province. This is one of Costa Rica's seven active volcanoes. The natural beauty of this area is possible due to the combination of rich, varied soil and an elevation between 4,000 - 5,000 feet. This elevation allows for a combination of both rainforest and cloud forest to meet along with the unique species of each.
Visitors to Poas Volcano National Park are in for a treat. The volcano itself holds the distinction of containing the world's largest active volcanic crator at nearly a mile across. The bottom of the crator contains an eery green colored lake which constantly releases steam.
There is a paved trail from the visitors center to the crator of Poas Volcano. The trail is a half kilometer long and is at a slight upward angle to the observation platform. Several other groomed trails are available in Poas Volcano National Park for wildlife observation.
The entrance fee to Poas Volcano National Park was recently raised to $10 for foreign visitors. It is however, highly recommended to go with a professional guide, as the animals that inhabit the Costa Rica rainforests and cloud forests camoflauge very well to their surroundings. |
