Overview

River Tubing on Rio Negro is a fun and exciting way to shoot the rapids in Costa Rica! If you have ever been to an amusement park before and tried the “lazy river”, you have had only a taste of what real jungle tubing is like. You’ll cover about 2.5 miles of easy going on a class I and ll river, encountering up to 25 rapids with contrasting stretches of calm river currents while in a durable custom crafted inflatable tube.

You will start at Hacienda Guachipelin Lodge, an award-winning eco-tourism hotel and horse ranch to check in, meet your guides and head over to the horse corral. You will have the option to go to the river by horseback or be driven in a vehicle. If you choose to go on horseback, your friendly guides will match you with a horse according to your ability level. You’ll ride on the scenic ranch trails down to the Rio Negro River.

Upon arrival, you’ll have an opportunity to use the changing rooms to put on your bathing suit and river attire. Please bring along a set of clothes that can get wet as well as dry clothes for after the tour. Your guides will give you safety instructions and provide you with tubes designed especially for this river - inflatable tubes with plenty of handles to grab on to and a durable protective lining that prevents tearing while you skid and bounce of river rocks. You’ll also wear a helmet as an extra safety precaution.

Some people have compared this river adventure to bumper cars because even with the speed of the rapids and variety of obstacles, your inflatable tube is meant to bounce gracefully off the rocks, absorbing the majority of the impact allowing you to stay safe and enjoy the adventure.

The guides know this river so well that they have named some of the rapids. The last series of rapids is called “the snake”, named after the fierce but slow moving twisting creature found in the tropical forest.

The Rio Negro Tubing activity is situated in a perfect place. The beautiful Rio Negro (Black River) winds through a canyon miles long in the Rincon de la Vieja tropical forest. During both the tubing and horseback riding portions of the tour, your guides will point out any wildlife that might be visible in the forest canopy. This region is a known habitat for three types of monkeys, over 300 species of tropical birds, sloths, iguanas and much more.

This 2.5 to 3 hour tour requires that each participant knows how to swim. If you weigh over 200 pounds please inform us as some restrictions may apply. Please bring clothes that can get wet and a change of clothes for after the tour. Enclosed shoes should be worn for horseback riding and river shoes are best for tubing.

The tubing was really fun. Exciting and the guides added to it because they seemed to be enjoying themselves.
