Costa Rica is definitely the place to go surfing! This surf lesson at Chocos Surf School located at Playa Samara is the perfect beach to learn how to surf. Taught by experienced surfers and surf instructors, these lessons should get you up and practicing riding the waves by the end of the lesson. Plus you will have use of the board for 2 more hours after the end of your lesson.
If you are staying in Playa Samara, someone will pick you up from your hotel and bring you to the beautiful white sand beach to meet any fellow classmates in your group. A group class makes for a fun dynamic where you might even make some new friends.
Your instructor will hand out high-quality surfing equipment and teach you the basics while on the beach. You’ll learn to lie on the board faced down and then “pop” up to a standing position. Once you have mastered this technique and a few others on land, you will head out into the ocean to put what you’ve learned into practice.
Samara Beach is protected by a surrounding coral reef which makes the beach perfect for beginners. The waves are small to medium sized and spaced out regularly. Plus there are surfing areas that usually remain unpopulated even during peak surfing tides.
The surf school was founded by a surf professional who has won competitions around the world for decades. His team of professional instructors also have years of experience as surfing teachers within the Samara area. Your instructor will stay with your group in the water and will help you through your maneuvers.
This is an approximate 90 minute surf lesson for beginners who are learning the basics of surfing. If you would like to learn at a higher level it is possible to book intermediate classes, too.
Transportation is NOT available and can take between 10 and 20 minutes to get you to the beach depending on your hotel location. Included are: Surf equipment and bilingual instructor. Please prepare for being out in the sun by wearing sunscreen and rash guard for surfing.

Wow! We all got up on our first try and rode our first waves to shore - even my 9 year old! Jose was super patient and fun. It was a great day of surfing. He made a deal too where we came back in the next days (I went back 5 times) and borrowed a surfboard to practice. Even on those days he would take time to give me little pointers to help me out. I won't call myself a 'surfer' yet, but Chocos certainly sent my family and me on our way!

Our instructor was very nice and patient. I wanted him to spend more time with my kids, but I'm sure it's hard to focus on 4 people at once. He was great about letting us use the boards over the week for no charge.
