Overview

Today’s leisurely guided tour will take you by horseback through the jungle, along the beach and into the streets of a small town called Cahuita where you will have the opportunity to see tropical birds and wildlife. Your local guide will likely be one of the last vaqueros, or cowboys, and a descendant from the indigenous people that settled in this area of southeastern Costa Rica.

Your tour begins with transportation from your hotel to a ranch where you will be matched up with a well trained horse according to your skill level. You’ll saddle up and head out through the village itself where you will observe the Spanish and Creole cultures first hand.

Continuing across the rich, black sandy beach of Playa Negra, you’ll gaze out over the crystal clear aquamarine waters of the Caribbean sea, surrounded by miles of protected reefs. The black beach sand is volcanic, a constant reminder of the geological history of this pristine area. You will cross over the mouth of Tuba Creek as if flows out to meet the ocean.

From the beach you’ll amble into a tropical rainforest filled with native wildlife such as Toucans, Sloths, Iguanas, and more. During your ride you will be following along the fringe of a protected national park, having the opportunity to see nature in its undisturbed, natural setting. Be sure to bring your binoculars along for up close viewing.

Horses are well loved and still used for transportation in many rural parts of the country. Good horsemanship is prized and if you are lucky, there may be one of the many annual rodeos being held nearby where you are visiting. Here you can see the great pride people take in their horses and presenting the cultural heritage of the cowboy lifestyle.

Whether you are an expert horseman or first time rider, seeing the great outdoor beauty of Costa Rica by horseback can create lasting memories of your time spent here.

This tour includes a local guide, all riding equipment, bottled water, snack and transportation from your hotel in Cahuita or Puerto Viejo. One way transportation can take between 15 minutes and 1 hour depending on the location of your hotel. Combined time of the horseback ride and round trip transportation can take between 4 and 5 hours. Please wear long pants, completely enclosed hiking shoes and sun protective clothing. Bring your binoculars, camera, insect repellent, sunblock and rain gear. This is a beautiful chance to see Costa Rica by horseback and is available for anyone age 5 and over.

Our guide spoke very little English, but that was okay because we didn't want to talk much on this tour. Riding on beach was amazing!
