Overview

This is mountain biking at its best! Perched on the continental divide at an elevation of 5,000 feet, the Monteverde region, including the quaint pueblo of Santa Elena, is known for its spectacular views and bio rich ecosystems. Bicycling through this amazing mountainous terrain, you’ll be traveling on back roads through cloud forest canopies, climbing up peaks and coasting into picturesque villages surrounded by rural farmland vistas that, on a clear day, may provide views of 4 volcanoes and the Pacific Ocean.

The tour will begin when you are picked up from your lodging at a pre-arranged time then brought to the reception area where your guides will greet you and go over the details of your trip. You’ll be matched with a quality light weight aluminum mountain bike and safety helmet suitable for your body size. It is highly recommended you wear shorts, tennis shoes and appropriate sportswear that wicks away perspiration. If you would like, bicycle uniforms, gloves can be rented for your biking comfort.

Your guides will lead you on gorgeous trails where you will be surrounded by the magnificent biodiversity of nature which makes this area so unique. The Atlantic and Pacific Ocean winds meet high up on the continental divide creating the unusual cloud forest environment that hosts some of the world’s richest biodiversity including over 750 species of trees, 90% of which are virgin forests. These giant trees are home to over 500 exotic tropical birds and one of the highest concentrations of orchid species in the world including 34 newly discovered species. In addition there is a rich variety of snakes, lizards, amphibians and thousands of interesting colorful insects.

Rocketing down into deep expansive gorges you may see waterfalls or cross streams while discovering the thrill of biking this tropical mountain paradise. As you work your way back up and over the rustic rural farmland you’ll be struck by the simplicity of life as you pass by small family-run coffee and banana plantations, so vital to the Costa Rican economy and lifestyle.

The ride is approximately 15 to 20 kilometer long (13 miles) and will take from one and a half to two hours depending on the ability of the group. It is recommended riders be experienced and in good physical shape as on a scale of 1 to 10, the difficulty level for this biking tour is in the higher range. Transport will be made available to anyone unable to complete the trip for an extra charge. Bicycles are checked and tuned, as needed, before each use to ensure the best possible ride.

Miguel, our guide, answered all our questions and gave us a challenging ride, which we enjoyed.
He was prompt in picking us up.

Guide was good, bike was in good condition as were the helmets. This was very steep and rocky roads. I am not accustomed to his type of biking so it was very challenging for us. I would do it again. great for heart.
