Cano Negro Wildlife Refuge

Cano Negro Wildlife Refuge is a flood zone surrounded by trees located off the Rio Frio encompassing some 24,620 acres. The low lying plain floods seasonally and is at its peak during the end of the rain season around October when the Rio Frio overflows. The refuge is home to several species of monkeys caimans, sloths, iguanas, basilisks, and many migratory birds. Since Cano Negro floods so often, the area is littered with lakes, groves, and marshes.

There is a high density of wildlife in Cano Negro Wildlife Refuge as much of the surrounding area is farmland. In essence, this creates a metaphoric island of rainforest and wildlife allowing for a centralized location to see a variety of creatures. Riverboat tours are the best way to spot wildlife as the guides can point out species that are sometimes not visible to an untrained eye.

Cano Negro Wildlife Refuge is open 8am-4pm daily. There is no park admission fee. Once again, a guide is highly recommended to thoroughly get the most out of your visit and to view wildlife that you most likely will not come across on your own.

The Northern Zone is an area of fairly unpredicatble weather where one can wake to sunny skies, weather torential down pours by 10am and then have sunny skies again by noon. Temperatures usually hovering in the upper 70s during the day and lower 60s at night. The rain season here runs from May through June and September through November. The heaviest rains are generally during September and October. Worth mentiong is the fact that despite the rains, September and October are usually the best months of the year for volcano observation. Though clearly not scientific, locals attribute this to the heavy rains knocking down the cloud cover around the volcano.

Visitors should pack shorts, tee shirts, appropriate shoes, rain gear, sun block. It is also advised to bring at least one pair of pants and a long sleeve shirt.

Fun Fact: Cano Negro and the Rio Frio are home to a thriving population of gaspar which are a prehistoric fish that grow up to three feet and can breathe air. Visitors will often see the snout of one of these creatures coming out of the water for a gulp of air.
