La Selva Protected Zone

La Selva Protected Zone is in the Heredia Province and occupies over 13,000 acres of land. This area usually has a constant hot temperature which is why it is a great area for tropical studies. Visitors can explore the area and view some of the studies that are taken place. Some consider this to be one of the top sights in the world for the diversity of the forest.

Research Station

La Selva Protected Zone is known for the plethora of plant life that occupies it. Researchers have been studying this area for years and out of the 2000 species of plants, 400 of them are trees. The biological station has laboratories and groomed trails that visitors can explore.

Birdwatching

Nearly half of the bird species in Costa Rica can be found in this area including the Great Green Macaw which comes here seasonally. Over 100 mammals, 123 reptiles and amphibians, 40 fish and thousands of insect species can be found in the La Selva Protected Zone.

Weather and Packing List

The Northern Zone is an area of fairly unpredicatble weather where one can wake to sunny skies, weather torential down pours by 10am and then have sunny skies again by noon. Temperatures usually hovering in the upper 70s during the day and lower 60s at night. The rain season here runs from May through June and September through November. The heaviest rains are generally during September and October. Worth mentiong is the fact that despite the rains, September and October are usually the best months of the year for volcano observation. Though clearly not scientific, locals attribute this to the heavy rains knocking down the cloud cover around the volcano.

Visitors should pack shorts, tee shirts, appropriate shoes, rain gear, sun block. It is also advised to bring at least one pair of pants and a long sleeve shirt.

Fun Fact: La Selva Biological Station has been administered by the Organization for Tropical Studies (OTS) since 1968.
