Papagayo Gulf

The Gulf of Papagayo is the all-inclusive resort capital of Costa Rica. These upscale resorts line the beaches, though few are within walking distance to the next. Visitors are attracted to the calm, warm waters found in the protected gulf which is great for both swimming and snorkeling. The fishing here is phenomenal, especially inshore.

The lay of the land is basically a road that wraps halfway around the gulf and another which can be taken to the other side. There are few restaurants, shops, bars or anything outside of the resorts, which is why most of them are all inclusive. Many of the resorts offer onsite entertainment and non-motorized water sports.

There is plenty to do within a close drive such as sunset cruises along the gulf or snorkeling. A visit to nearby Rincon de la Vieja Volcano where you can even enjoy natural hot springs at Las Pilas. Many other activities are also available such as canopy zipline, horseback riding, atv riding, whitewater rafting, tubing and many other adventures. A jungle riverboat safari through Palo Verde National Park is always a hit as you will likely see several species of monkeys, giant crocs and many shorebirds. There is even an ancient fish trap at the south end of Playa Panama in front of Sol Papagayo Resort which was used by the Indigenous people of the area hundreds of years ago.

The Northwest Pacific is one of the driest climates in Costa Rica. The beach areas have a fairly steady year round temperature with daytime highs averaging in the upper 80s to lower 90s. Night time lows are usually in the upper 70s. Precipitation varies through the year with the nicest weather between November and August.

Visitors should pack a bathing suit, towel, shorts, tee shirts, appropriate shoes, rain gear, sun block, and insect repellent.

Fun Fact: Though activities are reasonable accessible, do not make the mistake of just choosing an all-inclusive resort for a week. You will regret it; this is not Cancun or Aruba! There is a lot more to do and see in Costa Rica than just one resort and area. Combine your vacation with other areas such as Arenal Volcano or Monteverde and you will have the trip of a lifetime!
