Nosara

Nosara is a funky little seaside surf village located on the central Pacific coast of the Nicoya Peninsula. Access is only available via dirt roads which are generally in bad shape or via domestic flight. The village itself is set back from the beach area and fairly spread out, so it is better to have a 4x4 rental car to get around. There are several hundred year round foreign residents here, most of which are North American.
What To Expect
The North American residents of Nosara have brought modern amenities to the town. There are several choices for fine dining, a great little ice cream shop, retail beachwear shops, spa services, etc. Similar to many other surfing beach areas, there are several choices for yoga instruction and holistic healing.
Beaches
There are three beaches at Nosara. Playa Guiones is the southern most beach and most popular. The beach is a stretch of 7 kilometers of white sand and big waves with consistent breaks for surfers. Playa Pelado is the smaller middle beach. It is crescent shaped and has a blow hole which shoots water up in the air during high tides. Playa Nosara is the northernmost beach. It is difficult to access and mostly utilized by fisherman.
Turtle Nesting
Playa Ostional and Ostional Wildlife Refuge are located 6 kilometers north of town. This is the largest nesting site of Olive Ridley Turtles in the world. There have been as many as over 100,000 turtles recorded nesting at this beach at one time. This is not the normal by any means, but when an arribada occurs, hundreds to thousands of turtles come to dig their nests on this amazing beach.
Weather and Packing List
The Northwest Pacific is one of the driest climates in Costa Rica. The beach areas have a fairly steady year round temperature with daytime highs averaging in the upper 80s to lower 90s. Night time lows are usually in the upper 70s. Precipitation varies through the year with the nicest weather between November and August.
Visitors should pack a bathing suit, towel, shorts, tee shirts, appropriate shoes, rain gear, sun block, and insect repellent.
Fun Fact: Playa Guiones is one of the best surfing beaches in Costa Rica.
