Rincon de la Vieja

Rincon de la Vieja is a region located in the northwest Guanacaste province. The area is not exactly a town, but rather a few small villages and adventure ranches that combine for a zone near the national park and volcano of the same name. Rincon de la Vieja Volcano is one of the few active volcanoes in Costa Rica and though it does not spew lava, there are several hot springs to enjoy.
What To Expect
The area around Rincon de la Vieja is considered tropical dry forest. It is quite hot, but one of the driest areas of the country. The villages are small and spread out, so in most cases visitors stay at their adventure ranch for the entire stay including meals.
Activities
There are plenty of Rincon de la Vieja tours and adventure is the theme of the area. Adventure ranches offer a wide variety of tours such as canopy, horseback riding, rafting, tubing, canyoning and volcano hikes. No matter what lodge, the feel of the area is truly authentic Costa Rican and welcoming.
Weather and Packing List
The Northwest Pacific is one of the driest climates in Costa Rica. The beach areas have a fairly steady year round temperature with daytime highs averaging in the upper 80s to lower 90s. Night time lows are usually in the upper 70s. Precipitation varies through the year with the nicest weather between November and August.
Visitors should pack a bathing suit, towel, shorts, tee shirts, appropriate shoes, rain gear, sun block, and insect repellent.
Fun Fact: Rincon de la Vieja translates to old lady in the corner.
