Alajuela

Alajuela is the second largest city in Costa Rica. It is adoringly nicknamed the City of Mangoes and is known as one of the cleanest and safest cities in Central America. This is one of the most important cities in Costa Rica not only due to size, but also as it is home to Juan Santamaria International Airport and the capital to the Alajuela Province. Aside from the airport, the most popular attraction is Poas Volcano.

Poas Volcano is one of seven active volcanoes in Costa Rica. It looms over the city of Alajuela, though is often covered with clouds. Visitors can observe the volcano from the crater, which is well known for the blue colored water it contains due to the minerals.

A visit to Alajuela is not complete without stopping by the Central Park area known as Plaza del General Tomas Guardia. This is a park area with large mango trees and tropical gardens with park benches throughout. The Museo Cultural y Historico Juan Santamaria is a museum with free admission open to the public Tuesday – Sunday, 10am – 6pm.

Many consider the Central Valley to be the most comfortable climate in the world with temperatures usually hovering in the upper 70s during the day and lower 60s at night. The rain season here runs from May through November, though the heavy rains are generally during September and October.

Visitors should pack shorts, tee shirts, appropriate shoes, rain gear, sun block. It is also advised to bring at least one pair of pants and a long sleeve shirt.

Fun Fact: Despite the common misconception that Juan Santamaria International Airport is located in San Jose, it is actually located in Alajuela.
