The small hotel is surrounded by forest within a few minutes drive to the town of Santa Elena, Costa Rica. Hotel amenities include Internet access, a cafeteria-style restaurant exclusive for guest use, tropical gardens, and nature trails.
Monteverde is a beautiful place for ecotourists to discover and explore. The Cloud Forest Reserve provides world-class birdwatching and an enchanting cloud forest experience. Travelers come from all over the world to take in its beauty and of course, to observe the famous Resplendent Quetzals that nest here. Adventurers have plenty of options with ATV, horseback riding, canopy ziplines, and canyoning tours available daily.
Rancho Makena offers a quiet and peaceful ambiance. The satellite TV in the lodge's restaurant is available, but you just may find diving into a good book with the birds chirping in the background to be a welcome change of pace.
Reforested wood was used in the construction of the lodge. The cabins are split between two floors with separate entrances. Each has two large rooms including a small living room. They also have private bathrooms with hot water, refrigerators, and some kitchen utensils. Rooms do not have television or air-conditioning. Read a full list of amenities in the Amenity Section.
In summary, Rancho Makena offers a family and budget-friendly lodge. Guests can expect an authentic Costa Rican experience, combining rustic and natural style.

The owners are amazing, the breakfasts are amazing--so friendly and well worth visiting. This area is very cold, and windy. With no heat, we were freezing the entire time we were there. They provide extra blanket, so sleep wasn't a problem. The cabin we were in is old, but we knew that when we booked it. Nice kitchen so we made a meal. Owners were very accomodating with making a dinner meal for our daughter that decided to stay home one night. This hotel is very far removed from town along a bumpy road.. But close to 100% Aventura which was nice. The view from the main lodge breakfast area for Rancho Makena is beautiful. This is a great place to stay if you want to get away from it all...but have warm clothes..
