Overview

Explore the wilds of Tortuguero National Park from the comforts of the Manatus Hotel in Tortuguero, Costa Rica. In a region known for rustic ecolodges, this hotel shines through with modern amenities and comfortable rooms. Hotel amenities include an art gallery, spa and beauty center, fitness room, swimming pool, restaurant and bar, and WiFi in most locations of the hotel.

Tortuguero is one of the wildest and remote regions in Costa Rica. Rainforest, canals and the sea surround the area, making it only accessible by plane or boat. Many exotic animals live and thrive here including the rare jaguar, sloths, monkeys, toucans, monkeys, and many other animals. Several species of sea turtles nest on the beach in front of the town. The Green Turtles are the most common, nesting from the end of July until mid-October. During this season, tours to observe the nesting turtles may be booked through the hotel (subject to availability).

The Manatus Hotel offers a 3-day, 2-night or 2-day, 1-night package. Each package includes lodging, meals while at the lodge (beverages are NOT included), a Tortuguero village tour, and a Tortuguero Canal tour. The two-night package includes a second canal tour.

Unlike other Tortuguero lodges, the Mantus Hotel does NOT include transportation to the Lodge from San Jose, so this must be reserved separately. When transportation is added, it takes approximately 4 hours by ground (from San Jose, other destinations will vary) and another 1 - 1.5 hours by boat (25-pound luggage weight limit). Note that the entrance fee to Tortuguero National Park ($15 per adult, $5 for kids ages 5 - 11, fee for younger children - subject to change) and the Turtle Museum ($2 per person - subject to change) are also NOT included.

Downtime at the hotel can be enjoyable and relaxing. Take a dip in the swimming pool in front of the Canal or explore the lush tropical gardens. The Art Gallery features work (for sale) by the national artist, Marcela Crespo Gallegos. The spa and beauty center offers manicures, pedicures, massage, and hair treatments (additional cost).

The lodge's Ara Macaw Restaurant offers an excellent selection of Caribbean fusion cuisine. Those that prefer more traditional meals can choose from a variety of international dishes. The Morpho Bar is a perfect place to unwind after a day of exploring, serving tropical drinks and cocktails (drinks not included).

The twelve rooms at the Manatus Hotel offer more amenities than other Tortuguero lodges. All rooms have air-conditioning, satellite television, mini-refrigerator, private patio with shower, private terrace, and WiFi.

NOTES:

You cannot drive to this hotel. Transportation and boat reservations must be made well in advance of your stay. When a boat transfer is added, there is a 25-pound luggage weight limit. Planes have similar restrictions.

Even in the best of lodges, it is hot, humid, and rugged in Tortuguero.

Entrance fee to the park and museum are not included.

This was a very nice hotel, great air conditioning. Everyone was very accommodating. Again working with us to provide some great vegan food.

Beds could be more comfortable

Hotel room floor was warped. The staff was very helpful in taking care of our food requirements.

While the overall cost for the Tortuguero portion of out trip appeared to be a bit pricey, in the end it seemed to be a fair price considering the small number of rooms and thus guests and the hotel, and thus a nice quiet experience., Considering that we were the only passengers in the transfers both into and out of Tortuguero, and the fact that we were the only clients for the tours that we went on while at the hotel, I believe the price was appropriate.

It was a great experience being there! The staff even made a birthday cake for my husband! We would recommend this hotel to anyone visiting the area!
