Juan Santamaria International Airport (SJO) is Costa Rica's largest airport and your best option for destinations on the Central Pacific, Central Highlands and Valley, or the Caribbean side of Costa Rica. There are several hotels in the immediate area as well as a couple of restaurants.

When you arrive at SJO Airport, you will first have to go through Immigrations. During your flight, the airline should have provided you with documents, which you will have to complete and present here. You can check regulations for entering Costa Rica here: http://www.costarica-embassy.org/index.php?q=node/72. After going through Immigrations, you will collect your luggage and then go through Customs. Again, the airline should have provided you with a document, which you will give to the Customs Agent. After going through Customs, you will continue to the outside of the airport. If you have booked an airport transfer or rental car through Pacific Trade Winds, the company will be waiting for you with a sign with your name on it. Welcome to Costa Rica!

Private transfers offer a safe, reliable and flexible way to explore Costa Rica. They allow you to relax and take in the beauty of the country while being chauffeured by a professional driver. They can be reserved based on your schedule and are a door-to-door service. All of our private transfers are provided in well-maintained vehicles that are air-conditioned and registered for professional tourism transportation service. Your private transfer may be provided in a (registered) car, SUV, minibus, coaster, or larger bus, depending on the size of your group, road conditions, and any special needs.

Airport transfers are scheduled based on your flight itinerary. You may stop *along the designated route* for any restaurants, souvenir stands, photos ops, or just to stretch your legs. Many guests choose to stop at a popular attraction such as La Paz Waterfalls or even an adventure park to break up the ride. If you know in advance that you plan to stop for more than an hour, we ask that you please let us know so that we can schedule vehicles accordingly. Additional charges may be necessary. If you do not book additional time in advance and stop for over an hour, please be prepared to pay your driver an additional $20 per hour. This rate is only applicable to stops along the designated route. If you intend to stop off of the designated route, advance reservations are required. Of course, tips are greatly appreciated as well but not mandatory. At times, if unreserved, time beyond an additional hour may not be possible due to scheduling.

While drivers are friendly and professional, they may not always speak English. Most English speaking tourism professionals work in hotels and as tour guides. They will however, always be prepared for your route and to assist you with your luggage. If you require an English spoken driver or guide, please notify us at time of reservation so we can make the appropriate arrangements. Sometimes, this may require an additional fee if we have to pay a guide to go with you.

The beautiful curved bay of light grey sand and gentle waters of Playa Samara has attracted vacationing Ticos and foreigners for years. Unlike the more hardcore surf destinations nearby, Samara has friendly little waves suitable for novice surfers, so a day of lessons taught by one of the locals is a must! Playa Carrillo, located just south of Samara, is one of the prettiest beaches and best kept secrets in Costa Rica. These two gems combine for a paradisical off-the-beaten-path beach destination, unlike any other in Costa Rica!

Over the years, Samara town has developed a somewhat swank facade, but it is home to a variety of restaurants, shops, bars, and grocery stores catering to all tastes and budgets. This destination is perfect for couples, families, surfers, backpackers and because it is a favorite among Ticos, you will notice that it fills up on weekends.

Apart from small wave surfing, Samara has plenty of activities and tours to choose from. Water adventures include snorkeling, scuba diving trips with a variety of PADI authorized dive centers in town, kayaking, sport fishing, and boat excursions. A tour to Isla Chora, a tiny, deserted island that juts out of the water about a mile off the Samara coastline, is a magnificent way to spend your morning. You may kayak there or take a boat across, and have the time of your life snorkeling over a stunning coral reef filled with flitting multi-colored tropical fish and other underwater marvels.

Playa Carrillo, located about eight kilometers south of Samara, is one of the prettiest and best kept secrets in Costa Rica. This stunning stretch of white sand beach speckled with palm trees, allows you to escape the crowds and pretend that you are shipwrecked in paradise.

Kayaking and Snorkeling Tour to Chora Island

On this combination Kayaking and Snorkeling Tour to Chora Island you’ll be picked up from your hotel and brought to the beach at the town of Samara. With the help of your bilingual guide you will paddle by sea kayaks out to Isla Chora where you can disembark and go snorkeling to observe the extraordinary marine life below. Depending on visibility you may stop at a coral reef on your... way to the island as well. Transportation is included from Samara, Nosara and Punta Islita. One way transportation can take up to 45 minutes depending upon your pick up location. Total time for the tour including transportation is approximately 2.5 to 3.5 hours, again depending upon the pick up location of your hotel. Also included in this tour are: kayaks, snorkeling gear, bilingual guide, fruit snack, bottled water and fruit drink.

Surf Lesson - Chocos Surf School

Surfs up dude! Today you will learn the basics of surfing in a fun group setting with a professional surf instructor. This surfing lesson lasts approximately 90 minutes. You’ll receive high-quality equipment and hands on training to get you riding the waves in no time! Transportation is NOT available and may take 10 to 20 minutes to take you to the beach depending on where you are picked up. Total... time of surf lesson plus transportation is around 1.5 to 2.5 hours. Plus you get to keep the surfboard for an additional 5 hours to use on your own. Included are: Surf equipment and bilingual instructor. Don’t forget your sunscreen and rash guard for surfing!

This service is not available on Sundays.
