Puntarenas is Costa Rica's largest province. It stretches from Panama to Monteverde. Puntarenas also extends to the southern Nicoya Peninsula. The capital of this province is the city Puntarenas.

Puntarenas Province is bordered to the south by Panama and by the provinces San Jose, Limon, Alajuela, and Guanacaste. The total land area of the Puntarenas Province is 11,266 km². The population is 357,483 (2000). Puntarenas Province is divided into 11 cantons as follows:
