Rincon de la Vieja Volcano is located in the tropical dry forests of Guanacaste just northwest of the city Liberia. This is another of Costa Rica's seven active volcanoes. The area of the national park is approximately 14,090 hectares (34,800 acres). The meaning of Rincon de la Vieja is "the old lady in the corner".
Rincon de la Vieja National Park offers visitors a unique experience. Considered a tropical dry forest, the park offers a different climate and life zone than most other places in Costa Rica. Various species of cactus grow wildly, along with other species of plants indicative to desert like conditions.
Rincon de la Vieja National Park is also home to many waterfalls and a small rivers that have cut scenic canyons into the countryside. Furthermore, geysers and natural hot springs add to the mysique of this unique area.
The last Rincon de la Vieja Volcano eruption occurred in 1998. The volcano itself has 9 eruptive vents located within a 15 kilometer area. The highest peak of these volcanoes is the Santa Maria Volcano. This vent is considered to be inactive and has a crator with an eery green lake which is 500 meters across. Ambitious hikers can climb to the summit.
The entrance fee to Rincon de la Vieja National Park was recently raised to $10 for foreign visitors. It is however, highly recommended to go with a professional guide, as the animals that inhabit the Costa Rica rainforests camoflauge very well to their surroundings. |
