Costa Rica January Weather:
Most of Costa Rica is in the early part of the “dry season” during the month of January with high temperatures and very little rain. Temperatures at the northern Pacific Beach and lowland surrounding areas(Guanacaste region) average mid 80’s to 90’s with lots of sunshine. This area is known for its extreme dry season. The San Jose area usually averages about 10 degrees less than the pacific coastal area and the Monteverde/ Arenal area about 20 degrees less, with both areas still experiencing the dry season.
But it is a different story on the Caribbean Coast. The northern Gulf of Mexico is experiencing the very wet season and the southern Gulf of Mexico is also in the rainy season (though not as wet as the northern part).
This is also a good time to visit the Osa Peninsula area as they are experiencing a drier season with mostly beautiful sunny days (sometimes a quick afternoon or early evening shower) and temperatures in the mid 80’s to 90’s.
Costa Rica January Reservations:

Many people from colder climates need that break in the middle of the cold winter and since January weather is near perfect in Costa Rica, this is the time most people prefer to come. This means it is advisable to book as far in advance as you can since most of the hotels that offer great value are booked full many months in advance.
Costa Rica January Cost:
High season prices are in effect in January, which means you will pay more than in the green season, but you are almost assured perfect weather.
