Arenal Volcano is one of the most active volcanoes on Planet Earth. It is also Costa Rica's most active volcano. Arenal experiences mini eruptions, spewing lava every few minutes. This is one of Costa Rica's most visited attractions, with most tourists staying in resorts and hotels in the nearby town of La Fortuna.
Arenal Volcano came roaring back to life in 1968. Previous to the eruption, locals called it Cerro Arenal (Mount Arenal), as it was believed to be extinct. The eruption in 1968 was catostrophic, killing some 87 people. The eruption also claimed the entire town of Arenal.
Arenal Volcano rises some 1,700 meters above sea level. The shape of the volcano is a near perfect cone with 2 peaks. The last major eruption was in the year 2,000. As Arenal erupts so frequently releasing pressure, it is considered to be safe from the designated observation points.
Arenal Volcano looms over the scenic Arenal Lake and is part of the Arenal Reserve. Arenal Lake is Costa Rica's largest lake. This is a great destination for fisherman, as the lake is home to a healthy population of rainbow bass (guapote) and a toothy tarpon like species, machaca. Arenal Lake is a man made lake that was created in the 1970's to supply much of the country's energy by means of the Arenal dam.
The La Fortuna and Arenal Volcano area is considered to be the Adventure Capital of Central America. Tourists have a wide variety of activities to choose from. Though Arenal Volcano looms seemingly larger than life, it is often covered with clouds due to the gases that are constantly being released. For this reason, it is considered to be a good idea to plan a good full schedule, and with a little luck you might see the volcano. |
