Cano Negro Wildlife Refuge is located in the Northern Plains of Costa Rica, near the Nicaragua border in an area called Los Chiles. This refuge protects a wide variety of wildlife including 3 species of monkies, spectacled caimans, crocodiles, jaguars and sloths to name just a few.
Cano Negro Wildlife Refuge does not provide any groomed trails (or any trails for that matter). Visitors to the park must do so by boat. Riverboats are available and most tours to this area are actually organized from the popular tourist destination, La Fortuna. Accommodations in the Los Chiles area are also available, but are generally considered to be cabinas or jungle lodges.
Cano Negro Wildlife Reserve is also a great destination for jungle sport fishing. The park is a little known gem for such species as snook, tarpon, guapote, alligator gar and tarpon. There are rumors of catches such as guapote over 10 pounds and mighty silverbacks over 200 lbs.!
Cano Negro Wildlife Refuge does not have an official park entrance fee. A local donation is however recommended. |
