Irazu Volcano is located in the highlands of Costa Rica's Central Valley, near the city of Cartago. This is one of 7 active volcanoes in Costa Rica. Irazu Volcano has been recorded as erupting an astounding 23 times since 1723. The most famous eruption was in 1963 on the day that United States president John F. Kennedy began a state visit to Costa Rica. The eruption showered the Central Valley and San Jose with ash and lasted until 1965.
Since 1965 Irazu Volcano has been considered dormant, though frequent earthquakes are a reminder that the volcano is capable of roaring back to life. Irazu is Costa Rica's highest volcano in terms of elevation. On clear days, with high visibility, visitors can view the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean.
The entrance fee to Irazu Volcano was recently raised to $10 for foreign visitors. It is however, highly recommended to go with a professional guide, as the animals that inhabit the Costa Rica rainforests and cloud forests camoflauge very well to their surroundings.
