Turrialba Volcano is located in Costa Rica's Central Valley near the city of Cartago. This active volcano is surrounded by beautiful hillsides that are covered with lush green coffee plantations and dairy farms. Turrialba Volcano National Park encompasses some 1,579 hectares (3,900 acres).
Turrialba Volcano experienced minor eruptions in 2008. The last major eruptions were between the years 1864 - 1868. The volcano has 3 crators which can be viewed from observation points. Fumarole activity can be observed as gases escape from within the volcano.
The drive up to the Turrialba Volcano observation point requires a 4 wheel drive vehicle year round. During the ascent, visitors will pass through rainforests up to cloud forests, with the unique opportunity to view plant and wildlife species of each.
The entrance fee to Turrialba Volcano National Park was recently raised to $10 for foreign visitors. It is however, highly recommended to go with a professional guide, as the animals that inhabit the Costa Rica rainforests and cloud forests camoflauge very well to their surroundings. |
