Tapanti National Park

Tapanti National Park was established in 1982 and encompasses some 12,500 acres. Located in the Orosi Valley and Talamanca Mountains, this park protects the forested areas and rivers that run through it. The valley collects more rain than anywhere else in Costa Rica and provides San Jose with hydroelectric power and drinking water. Many streams and rivers run through the park but the main one is the Rio Grande de Orosi. This river provides for a great stop to cool off with a refreshing swim and enjoy the scenery.

Birdwatching

Unlike most other parks, Tapanti National Park is not known for its wildlife as there are only 45 species of mammals. Lesser known is the fact that birds can be sighted everywhere. There are over 400 species within the park including trogons, toucans, hummingbirds, and quetzals.

Fishing

Aside from swimming, hiking, and birdwatching, visitors can also enjoy trout fishing between the months of April through October. Permits can be purchased at the two ranger stations that are located in the park.

Park Admission Fees and Facilities

Tapanti National Park has two ranger stations with facilities available. The entrance fee to the park is 10USD. It is highly recommended to go with a guide for safety and overall experience as the wildlife is very well camouflaged.

Weather and Packing List

Located in a mixture of rainforest and cloud forest, the weather in Tapanti National Park is fairly predictable. Expect warm early afternoons and cool and damp conditions in the morning and late afternoons. Daytime temperatures average in the mid 70s with night time lows averaging in the upper 50s. The most consistent rain is experienced between the months of May through November with the heaviest rains September through November.
