Golfito is a port city on the east coast of the Golfo Dulce that is protected by 2 peninsulas. The city is not a particularly family friendly environment. At one time the United Fruit Company was located in this town. When they left in the 1980's, the general economy of Golfito crumbled.
Golfito is located close to the southern most border of Costa Rica in the Province of Puntarenas. The weather in Golfito is fairly predictable. Weather is best from December through April, during the dry season months. The months of May through November generally experience higher rainfall totals, with the highest amounts received between August through September.

Golfito is recognized as one of the finest sport fishing destinations in the world. Numerous world records for billfish have been set on boats from Golfito. Other area attractions include Piedras Blancas National Park, which is home to many exotic and endangered species of wildlife. Many simply utilize Golfito as a staging point before heading further south to Playas Zancudo and Pavones, which are recognized as top surfing destinations.
