Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui is located in the Northern Plains of Costa Rica approximately 67 kilometers north of San Jose in the Heredia Province. This is one of the least explored areas of Costa Rica. Sarapiqui is known for it's wild raging rivers and primary rainforests, which are home to numerous endangered species and wildlife.
The weather here is fairly predictable. Sarapiqui weather is best from December through April, during the dry season months. The months of May through November generally experience higher rainfall totals, with the highest amounts received between August through September.

There are many attractions in the Sarapiqui region. Some of the highest recommendations include La Paz Waterfalls & Gardens, Centro Neotropico Sarapiquis, the Sarapiqui River, Poas Volcano, and Selva Verde Wildlife Reserve. Due to the January earthquake, much of the Sarapiqui region remains inaccessable. Visitors are urged to call first before visiting.
