Puntarenas, Costa Rica is located centrally on the Nicoya Gulf between Juan Santamaria International Airport in San Jose and Daniel Oduber International Airport in Liberia. As with most port cities, Puntarenas is considered to be a little on the shady side, and should not be walked through alone or at night. At one time, Puntarenas was a thriving port city, with coffee being the primary export. These days, the port is only used for small shipments and cruise lines. Though several luxury hotels and resorts have been built in Puntarenas, the area still is a rusty reminder of what once was outside of the high resort walls.
Puntarenas is located along the upper Central Pacific coast on the Nicoya Gulf in the Puntarenas Province. The weather in Puntarenas is fairly predictable. Weather is best from December through April, during the dry season months. The months of May through November generally experience higher rainfall totals, with the highest amounts received between August through September.
