This 400 acre, self sufficient farm is located along the shore of Lake Arenal, giving guests prime views of the natural oasis that is, Costa Rica. In addition, this untouched piece of rainforest has 11 natural waterfalls, a scenic river that flows from Lake Arenal through the ranch’s property, and hundreds of different species of wildlife. Hotel amenities include heated swimming pool, WiFi internet access, restaurant, bar, yoga classes, tropical gardens, cow-milking and nature trails.

You won’t find your cliché tourists and crowded hotel rooms here, but rather an experience all of its own. You can walk next to a clear flowing river, embark on your own hike through the rainforest, or lounge around the hotel. Also, guests of the hotel are free to practice yoga on their own personal time, or during the group sessions offered by the yogis at Rancho Margot.

The only significant drawback to Rancho Margot (which gets top marks in every other respect) is the long and very rough gravel road to get there. We arrived in the Fortuna area after dark and the road trip in from the paved road seemed to go on forever. A couple of days later, one of our guides said that the guides refer to a place like Rancho Margot -- that is very much off the beaten track -- as "the place where the devil lost his jacket!"
