Overview

The Papagayo Golden Palms offers a beach front resort where you can enjoy a quiet, laid-back experience while touring the Guanacaste Province in Costa Rica's Pacific Northwest. The villa-style rooms create a nice choice for singles, couples, and small families on a mid-range budget. A garden walkway guides you to an expansive beach walk along the southernmost point of Bahia Panama. Along this remote are of natural beach there is no commercial activity. You can also take a leisurely dip in the large modern pool and lounge in the poolside patio chairs under the palm trees. Your hotel stay includes a buffet breakfast and the onsite restaurant serves up a fusion of flavorful meals for both lunch and dinner at a reasonable price.

Guanacaste beaches are typically less populated and easy to get to from the Liberia International Airport only thirty minutes away. Within easy reach inland lies the Rincon de la Vieja area providing outdoor activities from hiking the volcanic trail to see bubbling mud to extreme sports such as ziplining or waterfall canyoning. Hot springs, horseback and ATV riding are also available. It is best to plan off-site excursions in advance as they are not available from the hotel. Nearby Playa Hermosa and Playa Coco beaches offer surf lessons, snorkeling, sport fishing, ice cream shops, bars, and restaurant options. Some people prefer these beaches for swimming than the dark sand, rocky beach in front of the hotel. Exercise enthusiasts can hike over the mountain to visit Playa Hermosa but it is easier to get there by car.

While staying at the hotel you are likely to see (and hear!) the Howler monkeys living in the surrounding trees. These small monkeys, typically found in groups, will surprise you with their loud voice and family antics. Tropical flowers abound in the well-landscaped grounds where you'll find the single story villas. A large pool, located on the extended patio reaching out from restaurant and bar area, invites you to relax and enjoy the sound of the ocean surf. Within the air-conditioned bar, you’ll find tropical fruit cocktails mixed to perfection. The onsite thatched roof open air Arenas Restaurant provides a touch of tropical elegance with tablecloths, fresh flowers, and a view overlooking the beach. Every morning you'll be treated to a complimentary breakfast buffet. For lunch and dinner, the restaurant offers a fusion of reasonably priced menu options including locally sourced fresh seafood as well as typical Costa Rican dishes.

The rooms are found within clusters of villas and include small outdoor patios. Bedrooms are separated by a low wall from the split-level sitting area which contains a sofa, desk and cable TV. Some of the furniture is built by local craftsmen. A maximum of 2 people per room can be accommodated in the forest suite and 4 people in the family suites. The rooms are adequately furnished and the nicely tiled bathrooms provide plenty of closet space, a safe, hairdryer, and complimentary toiletries. Each room has a coffeemaker and free Wifi. The Papagayo Golden Palms provides a mid-range resort option for those who want to relax around the pool and take a long walk along an isolated Costa Rican beach.

We stayed here for 2 nights upon arrival in Costa Rica and again for our last night. It was so close to the airport, and was a great place to decompress after our long flight. The kids had a great time in the pool which was large and quiet. We had a wonderful time at the beach at low tide. So many crabs, and a rocky headland with tidal pools to explore at one end. The rest of the beach is sandy, almost no waves, and you can wade out far before it is over your head. Rooms were nice and staff was very friendly!
