Overview

Experience the thrill of flight as you zip by cable high in the lush tropical cloud forest of Monteverde, then come back down to see how the butterflies and hummingbirds do it!

Zip lining is a MUST DO adventure for anyone visiting Costa Rica. At almost 6,000 feet above sea level, Monteverde offers amazing views of virgin forests dissected by expansive gorges, tumbling streams and waterfalls.

This canopy tour, one of the longest in Costa Rica, offers 15 cables with 18 platforms and ends with a 1 kilometer single cable run. It is the only zip lining tour available inside the protected Monteverde Cloud Forest conservation area.

You’ll begin by meeting your friendly, bilingual professional guides in the reception area who will explain the safety protocols and help you into your flight harness. You’ll hike into the forest to the first platform where you’ll receive instructions on how to use the zip line equipment. The guides will assist hooking you up as you take flight on each cable as well as meet you at the next platform. Children, age four and up, can be escorted by guides and can also do some of the cables alone.

Walking and soaring about 4,000 feet above sea level in between platforms overlooking this majestic forest canopy, you’ll be able to view some of the most stunning landscapes Costa Rica.

You can also try out the famous Tarzan Swing, an elasticized cable allowing you to jump freely and swing through the forest where you might find yourself practicing Tarzan’s famous scream as well.

You’ll be hiking to some of the platforms on comfortable trails through the giant tree forest surrounded by an abundance of bromeliads, vines, ferns and mosses, so be sure to bring your camera. You might see wildlife and you are sure to see orchids as this area has the highest number of species of orchids in a single place on the planet.

Your last zip lining cable will give you a 1 kilometer ride with time to soar over the spectacular scenery before reaching the last platform. Looping back to the reception area, you’ll remove your harness before trekking over to the Butterfly Garden where you will be introduced to an extraordinary array of fluttering wings.

The 29,000 square foot Butterfly Garden is the largest live exhibit of Lepidoptera in Costa Rica. With a blaze of butterfly attracting flowers full of enticing nectar, the garden provides a home to many species of colorful butterflies. In the nursery you will see all the amazing stages of transformation turning a crawling caterpillar into a delicate free flying insect.

From the Butterfly Garden you will go to the Hummingbird Gallery where you can watch in excess of a hundred beautiful hummingbirds representing over 14 different species. Always hungry these miniature acrobats give a close-up, entertaining performance as they zip in between their feeders. Another great place to take photographs.

Round trip transportation from Monteverde as well as all entrance fees, professional guides and zip lining equipment is included in this half day combo tour. Be sure to wear comfortable closed toe hiking shoes and bring your camera.

The Selvatura course also has a Superman Zipline, which you can add by paying an additional $10 ONSITE AT THE SELVATURA FACILITY.

we did the hanging bridges rather than the hummingbird thing. Our guides were great and were good interacting with the guests. The hanging bridges were cool there too. This is a good zip lining experience for beginners. We did the Aventura zip lining the next day and it was quite scary. Don't book someone there unless they have definitely zip lined before and are pretty daring.

We again had not done our research and were a bit surprised with the tour largely being a zip line experience. The name should be zip lining with a side serve of butterflies and hummingbirds. That said, it was a lot of fun.

the hummingbirds were spectacular, but the canopy tour started late and lasted so long that my kids were falling apart from hunger and couldn't enjoy it in the end
