Maquenque is a proposed idea that would bring together several reserves and refuges in hopes to form a large national park in the wilds of the Northern Plains between the San Carlos and Sarapiqui Rivers. It would consolidate reserves such as Curena Forest Reserve and Lacustrino de Tamborcito Wetlands.
The Maquenque proposal is supported by several organizations, one of which being the World Parrot Trust. This organization in particular supports this proposal because this area has large populations of Almond trees, which in return draw the Great Green Macaws in to feed upon. Many threats in this area such as urban development threaten the flora and fauna that have prospered here over thousands of years.
