Hotel Poco a Poco is a budget-friendly, modern, and comfortable three-star hotel located in Santa Elena, Monteverde. This is an area of colorful contrasts, ever-changing weather, and lush cloud forests. Located on a side road between Santa Elena and Monteverde, the Poco a Poco Hotel offers guests easy access to the town's central shopping plaza on one side, and sweeping views of the countryside and cloud forest from the back. Hotel amenities include a heated swimming pool with swim up bar, a kids pool, a restaurant and bar, coffee shop, computer station, gym, spa, tropical gardens, and WiFi in some public areas.
The Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve is undoubtedly the top attraction in the region. At over 4,000 feet in elevation, and surrounded by much higher jungle-covered mountains, the weather can be cool, damp, and rainy at times. While this may not be the most comfortable climate, it is ideal for the numerous species of flora and fauna found here. Many species of rare and exotic birds thrive in the Reserve including Quetzals, Bellbirds, Hummingbirds, Trogons, and Emerald Toucanettes. Birdwatchers come from all around the world to see these and other species found in Monteverde.
Visitors to Monteverde can also choose from a wide range of other tours and activities. The canopy ziplines in this region are among the best courses in the world, with some of the longest and highest you will see. The hanging bridges tour allows you to walk through the canopy of the cloud forest, where most of the life is found. Other popular tours include visiting a local coffee plantation, ATV riding on the backroads, or horseback riding through the countryside.
While at the hotel, guests of Hotel Poco a Poco can enjoy the tropical gardens or the covered swimming pool. The pool is heated and has a swim-up bar and lounge area. There is also a small pool and free Children's Club for the kids.
The hotel's Naroa Spa offers a variety of massages and treatments. The professional therapists will help you select the appropriate beauty or spa treatment, using locally harvested, organic goods when possible.
Rooms are modest but clean and comfortable at the Poco a Poco Hotel. Standard room amenities include a telephone, coffee maker, hair dryer, cable TV, and in-room safe. Bedding options include two double beds, or one king bed, or one double bed and two single beds. The Bromelia Rooms are on the ground level and do not have a view. Quetzal Rooms are similar but are located on the second floor or higher, providing views to the town, countryside, or forest. Garden Deluxe Family Rooms are more spacious than the other rooms and are insulated for sound. The Garden Superior Rooms offer a private Jacuzzi and a private terrace. Please refer to the Amenity Section for a comprehensive list of what is included in each room category.
In summary, Hotel Poco a Poco is a reasonably priced hotel in an area that is known for overpriced accommodations. It provides a good value with nice rooms and hotel amenities complimented by excellent customer service and sustainable tourism practices.

We didn't expect such beautiful grounds at this hotel. Definitely an unexpected surprise. Great location.
Hotel was better than expected. Very nice, with terrific staff and an excellent restaurant.
Very nice rooms and the pool was good as well, although small. It is a beautiful property and the view is amazing. I was not impressed with the breakfast options.
Wonderful hotel and staff were very friendly and helpful.
Room was a bit dark. Restaurant very good
The automated check in was a new experience, but the staff were helpful and we enjoyed the hotel and the restaurant very much and would definitely plan to return.
Lovely hotel, good location.
Nice boutique hotel
PERFECT all the way!
Easy access to the village. Staff really welcoming and friendly.
Though... Had to learn to take a little less hot water when showering as they use ecological hot water system! Might be a good point to take up to your Northern Americans travellers! We are such big hot water users... But it brought a great light over our bad habit and we are now trying to do better! :-)
The staff was amazing. So helpful. People who can't walk up steps should be warned that there are no elevators. Location was great.
Did have some help up 4 flights with luggage no elevators. Amazing hangin thumberiga and hummingbirds. Beautiful sunsets.
Great hotel location & food
Very nice small hotel right by the town. The hotel gardens was beautiful where we saw lots of birds and butterflies. The only small downside was that the Rooms were a bit outdated and had no view.
Our rooms were very comfortable, but the real jewel here was the grounds of the hotel. There is lots of outdoor seating both covered and uncovered, with beautiful views out through the hills and a trail through the forrest. We were lucky enough to have 2 nearly sunny days during July rainy season, and both afternoons we sat outside for happy hour and watched the sunset, while watching green parakeets and other birds. Also saw armadillos in the flower beds! Only downside was our rooms on the top floor of the tall building had some sort of nuts or other debris hitting the metal roof all night, which made for disrupted sleeps.
I cannot say enough good things about this hotel and their staff! It is absolutely gorgeous. The rooms are spacious and larger than expected. The renovations are amazing! We love the outside areas, including the seating areas and the pool and the children’s playhouse. The staff is incredible. We especially loved Elizabeth, Isaac, and Kevin. They were so helpful. It was so hard to leave this incredible hotel. Gardens and scenery you’re absolutely gorgeous! The staff is so accommodating. We wish this hotel was available to us in the states. The breakfast is incredible, and the menu is fantastic. Everyone was so kind. We ask for this hotel by name and will be sure to recommend it to others!
Great hotel, loved the location and the 'yoga area' was a wonderful bonus. The on-site restaurant was very good.
Good value for money. The garden room worked quite well for our family group of five people. We enjoyed the little garden walk every day, and even spotted wildlife like agoutis. The covered pool and jacuzzi were quite nice, and sheltered from the constant wind at these high elevations. Breakfast was fine.
Nice staff, nice hotel.
This hotel was better than I could have imagined. The hotel and hotel grounds were soo beautiful. I tried felt like I was in paradise. This place was a 20 out of 10. Thank you for finding me this hotel
Hotel grounds and room was nice and clean. It was very cold in the evening and a lot of wind and cold air came in from under the door. Breakfast was tasty. Location was great as it was walking distance to shopping and restaurants. It did lack amenities that Arenal springs had.
Great service and food
The room was a little small but we were only there for 2 nights. Hotel restaurant was good but a little pricy. Many other local restaurant within walking distance that were cheap & had good food.
We were very happy to stay several days at this hotel. It’s location was great for walking In Monteverdi. The setting for this hotel was very natural with wildlife and beautiful scenery.
The steak at the restaurant is one of the best I've ever had. The room smelled a tad musty, but everything else was super.
Our family loved the fire pit, hot tub and pool. We enjoyed breakfast and happy hour as well. The hotel has a perfect location in the Monteverde area.
I was surprised at the number of stairs we had to climb to our room and this got to be a bit of a challenge for me at times. I know you can't do anything about the wind, but the howling sound reminded me of a prairie snow storm!
It was a nice hotel, the only problem was they put us on the fourth floor and there was no elevators. It made it very difficult getting our bags to the room as well as just going in and out for my older mother.
The room had no view to the outside world, only to an interior corridor.
It was also quite loud.
Lovely property, especially enjoyed the trail through the woods and the excellent restaurant. The constant howling wind was very exhausting.
Very clean hotel. Food options limited, including breakfeast. Grounds are beautiful.
Great little hotel. Very much enjoyed my time here.
Fantastic hotel that really contributed to our trip.
Good food and choices for breakfast. We had dinner at the hotel one evening - food was very good.
This hotel is a great location. It's within walking distance of the town. It has its own little nature path and gardens and nice views. The staff at the front desk was very accommodating when we were trying to reserve activities.
Cute hotel. Staff was friendly, okay. The pool was nice.
GREAT FOOD AND POOL/SPA. STAFF WAS GREAT.
Better than I expected. Close to some of the best restaurants in Monteverd. Large and confortable rooms.
This was a perfect location to town, yet quiet. Restaurant and hotel staff were very friendly and helpful.
The staff and view were too good and the guides and all the drivers and people everywhere and no matter where we went it was too perfect.
Hotel was wonderful. Bar was never open, but hotel was extremely clean and nice. We loved our stay here.
The rooms were clean and comfortable, and the overall facilities (pool, bar, restaurant) were fine. The primary downside was the four flights of stairs that had to be climbed to get to our rooms.
Excellent breakfast choices, with local breads, yoghurt, OJ, etc. Helpful people. Great location within walking distance of both Santa Elena and the restaurants and shops in Monte Verde.
Room could have used a frig, especially since there were local cheeses around.
I have no idea what we paid for the hotel b/c everything was packaged up together. The hotel did exceed my expectations. This is really a nice hotel. I was very afraid with the 3 star rating and how they say everything out there is different than our US expectations, but this was a really good hotel and you should always recommend it to Americans. It was super close to town and easy to walk to restaurants each night. The hot tub was great after hiking and zip lining.
I would recommend that future customers be warned about the temperature difference and the wind. VERY windy. Also we were lucky that we had long pants and sweatshirts. Dinner was reasonably priced and breakfast was good (not a buffet).
The staff was very professional and the restaurant meals were excellent. The hot tub was a nice end of day perk.
No air conditioning so we had to leave the windows open. Received numerous bugbites in the evening while sleeping due to the open windows. Food was very good.
This hotel was amazing wished we could have spent more time here, staff were faultless and breakfast was the best ever.
Pros: Professional and friendly staff, great ambiance, modern, newer appearance, good WiFi in room, good location and delicious breakfast, Cons: We could hear the people in the next room talking when we wanted to go to sleep, at night the rain was very loud on metal roof, no fridge in room, jacuzzi was not hot, cows and roosters woke us up at 4:45 A.M.
Room was a little smaller than expected
Was not a fan of this hotel. Very musty and damp, bathroom was not the cleanest. Room was small and cramped. Was in a great location for wandering the town.
Very nice hotel amenities. The room felt dated and definitely cramped for our group
Think we were spoiled at Arenal
Very noisy, breakfast was limited
Not good at all. The furnishings and linen in the room was old and bad.
Beautiful grounds and view, nice restaurant with an ample menu. The pool was too cool to use, since it is under cover and gets no sun to warm it, but we did enjoy the hot tub. It would have been nice to have some storage space in the room for clothes -- couldn't unpack.
This was the smallest of our rooms but the hotel was quiet. There was not a lot of choices for breakfast but everything was tasty. The hotels location near the center of town made up for the smaller rooms without closets. Housekeeping was great. We loved the hot tub too.
This is tricky to review. The hotel was older and didn't have the amenities that we would have liked but it was the only hotel in Santa Elena that had a pool and where we could walk to the town. We very much enjoyed being able to walk around town to the various (and delicious) restaurants and also to the grocery store across the street. The grounds of the hotel were lovely with lots of mature and beautiful plants. I think it is a good choice for the area. We wish that we had only stayed two nights here instead of three. It was an overall good experience.
Could have used a fridge in the room
We enjoyed staying in this hotel.
Loved proximity to town. While they weren't 5 star they didn't set a 5 star expectation so we were happy.
We LOVED Poco a Poco! The pool was fantastic and the tours we scheduled from there were first rate!
Really, my only complaint was the road noise. Trucks and motorcycles were very loud all night long.
The first room was not great and did not meet our expectations. We enjoyed ourselves more when we moved, but wish we didn't have to move.
Very nice hotel. Loved the breakfast each morning. The pool was very cold and the hot tub warm. The grounds though small are beautiful.
Breakfast was AMAZING every day. Not much interaction with staff other than checking in.
this was probably the worst part of the trip.
We had high-velocity winds the whole time we were in this location. One huge disappointment was the tepid temperature of the hot tub. It was only 93 degrees F. Hardly warm. I love going to hot tubs, but one trip to this barely warm tub left me disappointed.
Nice hotel and elegant restaurant on premises. The pool is covered and beautiful but too cold to swim in. The weather was very windy, which I guess is typical for this area. The hotel met our expectations. Not resort-like, but a nice hotel.
Bathrooms could be a little nicer. But overall, a nice and interesting hotel. Staff was very helpful.
Great staff. Great location in town. Close to everything. We could have spent more time there.
I think our slight disappointment with this place was partially due to off season. There was very little staff, none at the pool, but always someone at the front desk for questions which was good. The big jacuzzi was what we complained about, but even after they upgraded us, the jacuzzi in the honeymoon sweet was toilet bowl cleaner blue. I assume that because it is so remote of a location, the same level of luxury/service that the Arenal resort offered is not possible there. There was nothing else wrong with the hotel, it was clean and comfortable otherwise. Two days was plenty here.
Very nice, friendly, and helpful people. Great atmosphere, food, location. Overall absolutely nothing negative to say. Would highly recommend.
Guests need to request a lower floor if they have any physical challenges.
It was disappointing that we didn't have a fridge in our room considering that we had a grocery store across the street. We did have a little issue with ants getting in the (very tiny balcony) door. Quite expensive for what we had....bathroom desperately needs a update.
The room was so small there was no where to even put our bags to get things out. It was fine for 2 nights but would not stay for longer than that. Staff was very nice.
After Finca Luna Nueva Lodge we felt like in a cage. Small room. Hotel itself would be more less OK but having quite cold weather in the evening and strong wind there were no where to go. Hotel premises are quite small. Happy that stayed there only nights.
Hotel was lovely but rooms were small. The restaurant at this hotel was the best restaurant for food quality and value during our entire vacation!! Amazing food and staff.
Very nice hotel, beautiful setting
Lovely hotel, under renovation repair, which has to be done. Front staff attentive, kind and helpful. Room a delight.
This is a wonderful hotel and the staff was very helpful. We had scheduled to do a zipline while in this area but it was a very windy day so we were not comfortable doing that so we decided to leave this hotel early and head to our stop. The hotel staff was so very gracious in helping us make that change. And I must add that PTW staff was also very helpful in making this change. We are very grateful to have had so many people to assist us with this last minute change. The only reason I'm rating the cleanliness at an 8 instead of a 10 is that there was an open terrium in the bathroom which had lots of bugs, mostly ants. And while the room was clean when we got there within a very short time the ants from the terrium made their way all over the bathroom.
The Wifi connection was not good. Enjoyed the proximity to town and shopping.
Best part of the hotel was the central location. Otherwise, ordinary . I had a good-sized corner room so was pleased with that.
probably one of the best locations for this area, loved the hottub
They told us they had over booked but gave us a nice room and food vouchers. Very nice staff.
Very nice hotel.
Desk staff were excellent and very knowledgeable about the area.
Hotel was nice, food wwas excellent in the restaurant. you could walk to the small downtown and to catch buses to the hiking areas. Hotel was undergoing renjovation of the spa located by the pool and hot tub so it was not ideal but updates must happen. Views from the pool are were wonderful.
This hotel was a bit lower quality than what we expected/hoped to have. The room needed some maintenance and was small.
Beautiful grounds and views! We liked how close we were to town so we could walk there easily.
It was a nice hotel for the area. More noisy than others but the garden rooms were nicer. Staff was friendly and helpful. Beds were quite hard.
Really good people, but not a place I would want to stay very long, I would say the Hotel was a low grade, the staff especially Alexander was amazing and made it a better experience
We knew we were not at the resort anymore. 4th floor with no elevators was not my favorite, but we got used to it. Hot tub and pool areas seemed abandoned and "basic." Good in the sense that we could relax there on our own, but I never saw a staff person in that area and only 2 other guests sitting on a balcony overlooking the area... just felt "dead" around there most of the time. Better than crowded and loud though.
thought it was air conditioned but it wasn't - room was basic but clean and comfortable. staff was fantastic. had a birthday gift and card waiting in my room for me and the next day they sang happy birthday to me in the restaurant.
A lovely spot, good food, very easy to get around from this hotel.
Jacuzzi is barely 75 degrees. Front desk was responsive
Like everything except the noise.
well it was no arenal springs... but it was nice. it felt more like just a place to sleep than a destination.
Wonderful! Wish the hot tub would have been working. Great breakfast each morning!
We lucked out on our room which was protected from the wind!
We were in the room from hell the first night (room 45). The wind kept slamming some part of the roof or awning on to the side of our room, which was a corner room. We got NO sleep, and for the first time in history did we ask to get another room. To the hotel's credit they found us another room, and we finished the stay happy and content. The restaurant was one of the top restaurants I have visited, and that says a lot. The food was exquisite, and we chose to eat there every night, despite the fact that we always try to spread out our dining experiences. The cost was fair, and the staff great. The hotel desk also recommended a tour to Don Juan Coffee (?), and it was well worth the money and time. Nice.
Very nice for a boutique hotel. Great location. Rooms were very dated.
I thought that staff was lacking at time ( no one at the pool or pool bar). Bed was stiff. Hot tub was not very hot on both nights. Spa was nice. Staff was friendly. We loved the town of Santa Elena
This was a comfortable hotel. We enjoyed the pool. The staff was helpful.
Again we were greeted with a wonderful fruit drink and an excellent staff member. The reason I marked the overall experience only a 9 was weather related - the wind blew constantly and it was noisy - like we were in a major storm. The view out our window in the morning was wonderful - a rainbow every morning!
staff was very friendly. they went out of their way to make us feel at home
It was a nice hotel for a short stay. Restaurant was good for breakfast only, but it was near some nice restaurants in the city. Location was perfect, would not have wanted to stay up the hill in Monteverde. Also, poor wi-fi, only available early in the morning and late at night.
It was very windy and we were on the top floor with a window that couldn't seal shut, so it was a little drafty and noisy, but beautiful view and rainbows every day. Short walk to town which was nice
We were on the top floor.....lots of stairs. Ok for us but perhaps not for some. Staff and food were very good. We also had live entertainment one night.
