How much money should I carry with me?
Good to Know
The amount of cash to carry in Costa Rica depends on your planned activities. For souvenir shopping or dining without a credit card, $100 or 50,000 colones is recommended. If you're simply strolling or visiting the beach, $20 or 10,000 colones will suffice. Always secure any uncarried funds in your room safe.
This all depends on what your plans are. If you are going souvenir shopping or out for a meal and do not plan on using a credit card, $100 or 50,000 colones is a good amount. If you are just leisurely strolling or going to the beach, $20 or 10,000 colones is sufficient.
Any money that you do not carry with you should be locked in your room safe. You can also use an ATM in most destinations. However, if you plan to use an ATM, you must contact your bank to inform them of your upcoming trip before you come to Costa Rica.
Traveler’s checks can also be used, but will only be accepted by banks, which are typically only open from 9 AM – 3 PM, Monday through Friday. We do not recommend relying on this outdated system.
