The Best Waterfalls in Costa Rica
Rio Celeste Waterfall: This is hands down the most beautiful waterfall in Costa Rica and arguably one of the most beautiful in the world. The incredibly beautiful turquoise waters pouring over this waterfall are simply breath taking. The first time my wife saw the falls, she burst into tears at the sheer beauty. The hike in to see the falls can be muddy at times and there are a lot of stairs to go to the base, but your efforts will be rewarded with this natural wonder. Tours are available from local hotels or can be arranged from the La Fortuna and even Guanacaste beach areas.
La Fortuna Waterfalls: The La Fortuna Waterfalls are conveniently located within 10 minutes drive of town. The falls are absolutely beautiful and approximately 75 feet high. The hike down to the falls is not too bad, but what goes down, must come back up, so pace yourself!
La Paz Waterfalls: Located on the grounds of the Peace Lodge, the La Paz Waterfalls are a series of gorgeous waterfalls which are surrounded with beautiful tropical plants, trees and flowers. This is sort of the Disney version of the Costa Rica jungle, but well worth the visit if you have the extra time.
San Luis Waterfall: Located near Monteverde, the San Luis Waterfall is one of the most beautiful, yet least visited waterfalls for a major tourist destination. This is probably due to the difficulty in accessing it due to the poor trail conditions. Some tour operators offer horseback rides in, which is a much easier way to access it. The falls are approximately 300 feet high, so brace yourself for an amazing site!
Montezuma Waterfalls: The Montezuma Waterfalls are probably just as popular as the beach in the name sake town. The three waterfalls can easily be accessed from town via a short walk down an unpaved road. The falls vary in size from 10 to 80 feet in height. Pools form below each of the falls where you can swim and take in the beauty.
Viento Fresco Waterfalls: Located between Tilaran and Monteverde, the Viento Fresco Waterfalls are among the most beautiful in the country. The waterfalls range in height from over 60 feet to nearly 300 feet.
Diamante Waterfalls: The Diamante Waterfalls are the tallest in Costa Rica with one of the falls over 600 feet tall! The three waterfalls combined are early 1,200 feet high and are simply an amazing sight.
Savegre Waterfalls: The Savegre Waterfalls make a great day trip from lodges in the San Gerardo de Dota area. This is a cloud forest area with abundant plant life and beautiful scenery, which is all accentuated by gorgeous waterfalls.
Nauyaca Waterfalls: This is one of those hidden gems that few people ever have the pleasure to experience. The Nauyaca Waterfalls are located in the mountains near the south Pacific coast. They are only accessible by horse with a local tour operator and family. The falls come in from different angles and there is a large pool beneath them that you can swim in.
Tocori Waterfalls: The Tocori Waterfalls are only accessible via a private horseback riding tour as they are located on a private farm up in the mountains. This is an amazing experience with an incredibly beautiful waterfall and pool below it for swimming.
