Destination: Alajuela - SJO Airport

The largest international airport in costa rica...

Juan Santamaria International Airport (SJO) is Costa Rica's largest airport and your best option for destinations on the Central Pacific, Central Highlands and Valley, or the Caribbean side of Costa Rica. There are several hotels in the immediate area as well as a couple of restaurants.

At a glance...

  • Juan Santamaria International Airport (SJO)

When you arrive at SJO Airport, you will first have to go through Immigrations. During your flight, the airline should have provided you with documents, which you will have to complete and present here. You can check regulations for entering Costa Rica here: http://www.costarica-embassy.org/index.php?q=node/72. After going through Immigrations, you will collect your luggage and then go through Customs. Again, the airline should have provided you with a document, which you will give to the Customs Agent. After going through Customs, you will continue to the outside of the airport. If you have booked an airport transfer or rental car through Pacific Trade Winds, the company will be waiting for you with a sign with your name on it. Welcome to Costa Rica!

Airport transfers are scheduled based on your flight itinerary. You may stop *along the designated route* for any restaurants, souvenir stands, photos ops, or just to stretch your legs. Many guests choose to stop at a popular attraction such as La Paz Waterfalls or even an adventure park to break up the ride. If you know in advance that you plan to stop for more than an hour, we ask that you please let us know so that we can schedule vehicles accordingly. Additional charges may be necessary. If you do not book additional time in advance and stop for over an hour, please be prepared to pay your driver an additional $20 per hour. Destination: Puerto Viejo

Beautiful jungle-lined beaches and a rasta vibe...

If you're looking for gorgeous beaches, lush rainforest, and a Reggae vibe, Puerto Viejo, on the Southern Caribbean coast of Costa Rica should be high on your list. But if you're seeking an all-inclusive resort or large hotel with American-style amenities, you couldn't be further off. The Southern Caribbean coast is home to rustic lodges, some of Costa Rica's prettiest beaches, and an abundance of wildlife. Puerto Viejo is a thriving seaside village with souvenir shops, restaurants, bars, and more. You'll also find gorgeous beaches and unique lodging options. Frequently Asked Questions

How long should I visit?

Most visitors stay for three to five nights. It's a long drive from all other destinations, so you'll want to stay long enough to make it worth your travel time.

Is there a lot of crime in the Caribbean?

Unfortunately, crime is more prevalent on the Southern Caribbean than most tourist-geared towns on the Pacific coast. Most crime is easily preventable by leaving valuables locked up in hotel safes, not flashing money, and not walking or biking alone in unlit or poorly lit areas. We do not recommend walking around with expensive cameras or anything that could potentially make you a target. Never leave anything of value unattended on the beach.

When will I find the best prices?

May through August and November.

What is the weather like?

The Caribbean side of Costa Rica has opposite weather patterns than the Pacific coast. The best weather is typically in March, April, September, and October. Daytime temperatures are usually in the low 90s and night time temps are typically 15 degrees lower. No matter when you visit there is always a chance of rain on the Caribbean side so always be prepared with rain gear.

Which airport should I use?

Visitors to the Southern Caribbean should use San Jose Airport (SJO). Transfers usually take around four to five hours, so we recommend using an airport hotel between the airport and your Caribbean hotel.

Is the Caribbean a good fit for me?

While the Caribbean is a cool place for some, it's far from perfect for others! Do NOT go to the Caribbean if you want to stay at an all-inclusive resort or large cookie-cutter chain resort. You won't find anything like this on the Caribbean side of Costa Rica. The Caribbean is very laid back, so don't expect fast or even professional service in many situations. So if you're somebody that expects or wants what you want when you want it, by all means, skip the Caribbean! When it rains, it pours. The Southern Caribbean receives a lot of rain, especially from November through the beginning of February and May through July. So in a nutshell, if you want gorgeous beaches, lush jungle, wildlife, and a laid-back vibe, and you're open to basic lodging, unpredictable weather, and mediocre services, the Caribbean just may be a perfect addition to your vacation.

Where is Puerto Viejo?

Puerto Viejo is on the Southern Caribbean coast of Costa Rica in the Limon Province. From San Jose, head east on Rt. 32 to the city of Limon and then south on Rt. 36 along the coast until you reach Puerto Viejo.
