Overview

Poas Volcano Lodge, high up in a cloud forest only one hour from the San Jose airport and next to the beautiful Poas Volcano, provides the ideal place to begin or end your Costa Rican vacation. This cozy three star mountain retreat, perfect for families and romantics, features vibrant gardens, hiking trails, volcano views, and a welcoming communal area with open fireplaces and activity rooms. Freshly prepared meals at the onsite restaurant include locally sourced coffee, strawberries, and a variety of dairy products from the adjoining dairy farm. It’s a great place to immerse yourself in rural Costa Rican culture away from the big city lights.

The Resplendent Quetzal and other rare tropical bird species are often spotted in the highland cloud forest surrounding the Lodge. At 6,000 feet, this cool mountainous area grows some of the best coffee beans in the world. Plus the rich volcanic soil produces excellent strawberries almost year round. The lodge is easily within reach of both Poas Volcano National Park and the La Paz Waterfall Gardens.

Poas Volcano, best seen in the morning before the fog rolls in, offers incredible views of its active crater, the largest in the world. Comfortable concrete park trails take you past the rim where on a clear day you can see the crater’s colorful lake and steaming fumaroles. A visit to La Paz Waterfall Gardens will astound you with beauty as you leisurely walk through the brightly colored tropical flowers and stop to admire five different cascading waterfalls. Along the way, you’ll encounter an orchid house, butterfly conservatory, outdoor hummingbird garden, a serpentarium, and frog pond. You can also visit the onsite Wildlife Refuge where you’ll have the chance to see rescued animals close-up including several species of monkeys and large indigenous jungle cats.

Back at the hotel, the solid stone lodge’s cozy communal areas are dotted with wood burning fireplaces. Here, you’ll find a large comfortable sitting area where coffee, tea, and homemade cookies are served daily around 4:30. Also, a glass enclosed library and reading room, a game room with pool tables and chess, plus a theater style TV room with available movies. The grounds are covered with gardens where you’ll find birds perched on several bird feeders. The lodge has well marked walking trails for guests to explore the beautiful outdoors. In rainy weather, complimentary rubber boots are provided for hiking. The lodge will also provide binoculars for your use.

The warm inviting restaurant is best known for its Chilean Sea Bass dinner served with mango salsa. The complimentary breakfast includes a hot meal plus freshly churned butter, homemade bread and yogurt, locally picked strawberries, and fresh coffee, grown and ground on area farms. Throughout the lodge, you’ll find beautifully hand carved wooden furniture built by local artisans preserving this cultural art form while creating sustainability within the local community. Most of the friendly staff you will meet are from the area as well.

The individual rooms, built of stone with wooden interiors and soft lighting, blend traditional authentic cottage architecture with modern tasteful art. Five of the rooms are found within the main lodge building while seven are located in separate buildings on the estate. All rooms have either a garden or Volcano National Park view. All also have a private bathroom with hot shower, coffee maker, and internet access plus WiFi. Two of the larger rooms have a fireplace and sitting area, the others come with space heaters. For more details see the Room Amenities listed below.

Instead of staying at an airport hotel, you might like to fit one more amazing Costa Rican experience into your vacation by staying at the Poas Volcano Lodge.

I love this hotel but the only thing is that we needed a little bit more lighting in the rooms and yes my kids loved the farm life there. All the cows, and the cow milking and the chicken feeding and the peace lodge was beautiful. Love the scene and all the birds around the place. Love nature and everywhere we went.

Lovely private cabins, wonderful staff, interesting reading rooms in the lodge with quaint little wood stoves.
Super breakfast and a caring friendly waitress and waiter
