The Savegre Mountain Hotel is a nice ecolodge for birders and to experience the cloud forest. The Savegre River runs in front of the hotel and then the property is backed by cloud forest covered mountains with trails. Gardens and trees surround the rooms. The rooms are basic but the shower was remarkably powerful and hot for a place like this. We had a fireplace in our room, which we used each night. There is a good trail system behind the lodge. We hiked it on our own and saw many birds, including bellbirds, quetzals, various hummingbirds, emerald tourcanettes, and many other species. The food at the restaurant was excellent. The service at the front desk was a little disappointing. We had problems with our room safe and had to ask multiple times for assistance before it was addressed. We took a quetzal tour with the hotel and saw five quetzals. The guide was good but there were other groups in the same spot as well as the quetzals had congregated to one specific tree. We were able to take some great photos from our vantage point. We also took a horseback riding tour through the hotel. This was a big disappointment. We booked it for two hours. The guide was 45 minutes late to start, he spent the majority of his time on his cellphone throughout the tour, and then returned us to the lodge after only an hour. As we speak Spanish, his lack of English did not bother us, but we still spoke little as he was consumed by his phone. All in all, this was a nice lodge and we were happy with our stay and choice to stay there.
