Overview

Take the plunge! Snorkeling the sparkling, aquamarine waters in the Gulf of Papagayo provides an amazing underwater adventure full of colorful marine life. You’ll go by boat to two different offshore sites to explore coral reefs, rock formations, plus sandy ocean floors - home to several species of rays.

This snorkeling tour begins with transportation from your hotel to Rich Coast Diving Center in Playa Coco also known as Coco Beach. You’ll meet the staff including your professional snorkeling guide and head over to the boat. Your guide will pick the best locations for snorkeling on the day of your visit based on current visibility conditions. You will be fitted with high-quality equipment including fins, snorkel mask and tube.

The Gulf of Papagayo, located in Guanacaste on the northwest shores of Costa Rica, is trimmed with several popular beach towns including Playa Hermosa and Playa Coco. The best snorkeling conditions are from September to January when the waters are a bit cooler. At this time the sea is alive with plankton attracting many different species of marine life like sea turtles, dolphins, several species of rays, and sharks.

There is very little current in the Gulf of Papagayo, so whatever the time of year, prepare to see giant schools of colorful, tropical fish such as angel fish, parrot fish, yellowtails, octopus, starfish, eels, and a whole lot more. Typically the visibility ranges from 30 – 50 feet allowing you to explore the teeming marine life living in the magical realm just below the water’s surface. While cruising by boat to the two snorkeling sites, you may get lucky and see Humpback whales as they migrate to and from their breeding grounds.

This tour includes a chartered boat, professional guide, all snorkeling and safety equipment, bottled water, fruit snack, and transportation from your hotel in the Papagayo area. One way transport can take from 15 to 45 minutes depending on the location of your hotel. Total time for this snorkeling adventure with round trip transportation typically takes from 3.5 to 4.5 hours.

Please wear a bathing suit with sun protective covering, sunglasses, sunscreen, hat, and bring along a towel plus a dry change of clothing. You will want to bring an underwater camera, if you have one, to shoot memorable photos of your snorkeling experience.

It was on the cool and windy side so not the best day for snorkeling.
