Overview

Riding through Turrialba’s beautiful scenic countryside on horseback will connect you to Costa Rica’s rich culture of horsemanship. Horses are the pride and joy of most Costa Ricans and almost every town has an annual rodeo with a Tope where horses actually dance!

Your tour will begin when you are picked up from your hotel and driven to a well maintained stable for your cross country horseback riding adventure. When you arrive, your Costa Rican “cowboy” will greet you and match you with a horse suitable for your experience and skill level.

The horses at this ranch are well fed, calm, and trained to be ridden by riders with a variety of skill levels. Beginners are most welcome. You will receive high quality riding helmets as well as a safety talk to ensure the safest trip possible.

When everyone is saddled up on their horse, you’ll begin sauntering slowly past sugarcane fields and coffee plantations. The Turrialba countryside sits in the shadow of the active Turrialba Volcano, rising high up in the sky at almost 11,000 feet. There is a good chance you will see stunning views of it on your ride. Be sure to have your camera along!

You’ll also see amazing views of the surrounding mountain range, a small but beautiful lake and ride through lots of lush tropical rainforest. Certain parts of the route are booming with wildlife. Your guide will assist you in identifying different species that may be present during your ride. Keep your eyes open for sloths, iguanas, and interesting bird species such as Oropendulas, Toucans and Black Guans.

This tour includes admission, tour guide, horse expert, safety equipment and transportation from Turrialba. One way transport to the stables can take between 15 minutes to 1 hour depending on the location of your hotel. Combined time of horseback ride and round transportation usually takes between 3.5 to 5 hours.

Children 8 years old and up can participate in this tour. For younger children please inquire about special tours that are available. When making a reservation, it is important to specify if a person weighs over 200 pounds but less than 220 pounds to make sure a horse will be available. There is a 220 pound weight limit.

You will want to wear long pants in the saddle and fully enclosed shoes for the stirrups. Please bring along bug repellent, sunscreen, rain jacket, a bottle of water and your camera.
