Hotel is very spread out over a hillside; need to take a shuttle to get to higher buildings. No soundproofing between rooms. We had to switch rooms due to noisy family next door (switched to much nicer room). Restaurant not great.
Find your place to stay
El Establo Mountain Hotel in Monteverde offers captivating long views of the cloud forest or Nicoya Gulf from its rooms and suites. Guests can choose from Deluxe, Junior, Honeymoon, and Family Suites, all featuring balconies or terraces. The hotel provides a range of amenities including property trails, a gym, tennis courts, a heated pool, and a spa. Dining options feature Costa Rican and international cuisine with panoramic views, notably Laggus overlooking a natural lake.
Monteverde’s greenery and long views give El Establo Mountain Hotel a reason to pause between cloud-forest adventures. From rooms and suites with balconies or terraces, the outlook reaches toward the forest or Nicoya Gulf, depending on your accommodation. That contrast between nearby foliage and distant landscape becomes part of the stay’s appeal.
The accommodation choices make the hotel useful for different traveling parties. Deluxe Rooms, Junior Suites, Honeymoon Suites and Family Suites share balconies or terraces and sitting areas, while other features vary. A Honeymoon Suite adds a hot tub; a Family Suite has a living room and mezzanine bedroom. Pick the room around how you would like to spend the quieter hours and who is coming with you, then let the forest or gulf outlook become part of that daily rhythm. Comfortable furnishings and plush beds give those outlooks a welcoming indoor counterpart.
Walk the property trails, keep a fitness routine in the gym or play tennis before turning to a slower afternoon in the gardens or heated pool. The spa uses natural and organic products in treatments and massages, giving restorative time its own place in the stay. With these choices close at hand, a day without a major excursion can still have a satisfying rhythm.
The restaurants blend Costa Rican and international cuisine using fresh, locally sourced ingredients, with panoramic views of the forest and surrounding landscape. At Laggus, the outlook reaches over the property’s natural lake. Leave time for a meal as part of enjoying the setting, rather than treating dining simply as a pause between outings.
Energy-saving initiatives, water conservation and waste management are among the hotel’s environmental practices, alongside support for local communities and biodiversity initiatives. In a region whose forest draws so much of your attention, these measures give the hotel’s sustainability focus practical context.
The staff can help with restaurant and boutique recommendations when you want to explore beyond the grounds. Guided cloud-forest hikes invite closer attention to the region’s plants and animals, and hanging bridges change your perspective on the forest. El Establo’s combination of facilities and surroundings means those excursions need not fill every day: a walk, a meal with a view and a quieter afternoon at the hotel can hold their own place in the itinerary.

The views from this hotel are unbelievable!! The staff was wonderful! The shuttles always came within a couple minutes of calling for one. However, the buildings are very echo-ie and I couldn't get good rest here. I also didn't feel like there was much to do. The property is very spread out. The spa was wonderful!! Definitely worth going to once.

Hotel was lacking lighting. It was so dark in the room you couldn’t read a book. Trails on property not marked.

Great views but felt a little trapped by needing to take a shuttle to and from the entrance. I’m athletic but still found it difficult to get from our room to the entrance without a shuttle due to the steep climb up the hill to our room. Probably would stay at another hotel for that reason if we went back.

Nice hotel, not as many amenities as Arenal but nice mountain and Pacific Ocean view.

Beautiful sunsets.

Enjoyed our stay very much. Liked having an outdoor patio overlooking the hillside/inlet. Particularly nice that we could easily walk into town for dinner.

The view from our room was exceptional! Transportation shuttles inside the resort were great. The filet tenderloin steak I ordered in the hotel restaurant was too tough and I sent it back. The rooms were not soundproof and conversation between rooms could be heard.

Walls must be very thin.

The area we were in was noisy. Could hear neighbors voices and hallway activity. Also lighting was poor in dressing area. Beautiful though.

The restaurant was not very good and very expensive. We should have gone across the street to the restaurant where someone said it was good and much less expensive.

Room layout was a bit odd. Bathroom sink and desk were set very high, even for someone like me who is six feet tall. The coati that we could see from outside our room sometimes were neat.

As I reported in my phone call, the rooms were almost spartan in their lack of amenities. The bathrooms were fine but the rooms themselves lacked things like a coffee table, reading lights (the lights by the bed were mounted so low that unless you wanted to read flat on your back you were out of luck), spotty internet service, etc. However, the views were spectacular from the rooms, you saw coutis all the time from your balcony, the restaurant was superb. After the first impression, we resigned ourselves to the rooms and just enjoyed the rest of the experience.

Good location. Easy to walk into town for dinner. We got a little lost on their hiking trails which were not well marked and quite overgrown. There was alot of noise from the hallway, but luckily, the other people that were staying next to us were also "early to bed", so it wasn't a problem for us.

Would choose a different hotel in Monteverde or Santa Elena with smaller property.

Too many stairs!! Being a large property it was either walk up hill or down hill or call for the shuttle.Beautiful view from the patio. Freezing cold in the bathroom. We closed the window over the tub but this didn't really help. The room was comfortable due to west face orientation. Would not choose this hotel again.

The el establo was sort of the low point of a very good overall trip. The hotel I found a little too rustic for what it was billed as.

Wonderful staff, lovely hotel, beautiful setting - loved the view including the spectacular sunset!

Views were amazing but overall the hotel needs updates. The staff are not friendly.

Great hotel!

The hotel met my expectations. We did not select a top end hotel because we had so many excursions
The bath water came out brown after telling them multiple times, it never got fixed. Also, the house keeping kept giving us less towels each time they came. We only got one and had to call down for more. We were a couple in the honeymoon sweet, why only one towel?

rooms were dirty and the walls were very thin. food was overpriced. view was exceptional.

Nice spacious high ceiling room and comfy beds. Beautiful Mountain View’s. No alarm clock, no AC, but the room was cool due to high altitude. Shower was too slow. No hot water for the tub.
