Fondavela Mountain Hotel

Monteverde

Good to Know

Fondavela Mountain Hotel in Monteverde offers a serene escape amidst over nine hectares of forested grounds and tropical gardens, ideal for nature enthusiasts and birdwatchers. Its spacious rooms, adorned with local art and hardwood, provide a comfortable base for exploring the nearby Cloud Forest Reserve. Guests can unwind in the covered heated pool and Jacuzzis after highland adventures, then choose from three distinct dining venues for evening relaxation.

Forest walks and warm-water afternoons at Fondavela

Forest fills much of Fondavela Mountain Hotel's grounds, with tropical gardens and fountains drawing birds toward the places where you walk and linger. Set near the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, the lodge makes the highlands part of the stay itself. Its simple, spacious rooms feel connected to the setting through Costa Rican art and natural hardwood furnishings.

More than nine hectares of mostly forested land give you space to explore. Wildlife moves through this landscape, and the gardens offer opportunities for birdwatching between larger outings. Bring a camera on a walk around the grounds, or simply take time to notice what the trees and fountains attract.

Look closely at the highlands

Monteverde's forests rise above 4,000 feet, with higher mountains beyond. Cool, damp and often rainy conditions shape both the landscape and the experience of exploring it. The Cloud Forest Reserve is a quick drive or a long hike from Fondavela. A professional guide with a spotting scope can help you look for bellbirds, trogons, hummingbirds, emerald toucanettes and resplendent quetzals; the search is part of the pleasure, without a guaranteed sighting.

Other days can take a different direction. Visit a coffee farm or ride horseback through the countryside for a closer look at local life. Canopy ziplines and hanging bridges bring the treetops into view, while canyoning, waterfall rappelling and ATV outings on backroads add more active possibilities. You can alternate those adventures with time in Fondavela's own forest.

A warm-water return

The covered heated swimming pool is an inviting counterpoint to a cool highland outing, with two Jacuzzis alongside it. A pool table and ping-pong table give the area another kind of activity. Lockers, dressing rooms, restrooms and showers make it convenient to move from a walk to a swim, while spa services offer a quieter pause.

Three ways to enjoy the evening

Large windows at Galleria Restaurant keep the surrounding landscape in sight over Costa Rican and international dishes. Fireside Restaurant brings a different atmosphere, with a wood-burning fireplace and the same blend of cuisines. At La Taberna Sport Bar, tropical cocktails and televised sports make an easy evening of their own.

Room choices differ in size and sitting arrangements. Standard Rooms and Junior Suites have cable television, mini-fridges, coffee makers and telephones, and the larger categories give you more space to settle in. Confort Rooms add a sitting area and sofa bed, while Superior Rooms provide another roomier option. Compare the individual room layouts before choosing. WiFi is available in some public areas, so plan around those spaces when you need to connect. A forest walk, a warm swim and dinner with the surroundings still in view can be reason enough to keep part of the day free.

Room was beautiful. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. Food was delicious. The pool was way to cold to swim and hot tubs were barely hot. Beds not very comfortable.

Tova L.

The rooms were spacious but could have been cleaner. The grounds were very nice.
