Mawamba Lodge

Mawamba Lodge

Good to Know

Mawamba Lodge in Tortuguero offers a nature-focused retreat nestled between the region's canals and the Caribbean Sea. Guests can explore gardens and trails, unwind by the pool and whirlpool, and enjoy meals at the on-site restaurant and bar. Packages include lodging, meals, standard tours, and round-trip transportation from select San José hotels, providing a seamless experience of Tortuguero's unique environment. The lodge emphasizes wildlife viewing and a quieter pace, with options for guided canal tours and visits to Mawamba Park.

A quieter interval between water and forest

At Mawamba Lodge, Tortuguero’s canals and the Caribbean Sea frame a narrow strip of land where a nature-focused stay has its own slower pleasures. Gardens and trails invite a closer look, the pool and whirlpool offer an easy place to unwind, and a coffee room with a put-and-take library makes a quiet hour especially appealing. A restaurant and bar keep meals and downtime close, with WiFi available in some public areas.

Watch the water, then pause on the grounds

Boats take the place of roads around Tortuguero, reached by boat or plane. Green macaws, toucans, sloths and monkeys inhabit the region, and jaguars live in the forest too; each outing is an opportunity to look and learn rather than a promise of a particular animal. Optional nesting turtle tours carry an additional fee and depend on availability. Confirm dates before planning around the end-of-July to beginning-of-August window.

Come ready for Tortuguero’s hot, humid and rugged character. The Caribbean shore is part of the scenery, but swimming there is prohibited because of riptides and unsafe conditions. Use the lodge pool for a swim, and leave the beach for the views and appropriate guided experiences.

Choose your room and nights together

Standard and Superior accommodation has fans, safes, screened windows, private bathrooms and porches. Superior Rooms are larger casita-style rooms with a king bed and a spacious bathroom with a hot tub. Adults-only Bungalow categories add air conditioning; confirm their exact age condition when choosing your room. Select accommodation alongside the number of nights, since packages offer different amounts of time for outings and enjoying the lodge.

Arrive through the canals

One-, two- and three-night packages include lodging in the selected room style, meals at the lodge, standard tours and round-trip transportation from select San José hotels. The road journey takes around 4–5 hours, including a breakfast stop only when using the lodge’s provided transportation. The boat ride adds another 1–1.5 hours, with a 25-pound luggage limit. Arrange transportation well in advance.

A buffet lunch welcomes you on arrival, followed by a village visit and a walk back along the beach trail when weather permits. Those transitions are part of the appeal of staying here: a journey on the waterways, a look around Tortuguero, then time back in the gardens before dinner.

An early outing or a fuller schedule

With a one-night package, coffee is available at 5:30 am on day two before the 5:45 am guided canal and national park boat tour. After a couple of hours, return for breakfast at 8:00 am, followed by departure at 9:00 am. A two-night stay has a different rhythm: breakfast from 7:30–9:00 am, then a mid-morning Mawamba Park visit to the butterfly garden, river turtle area and bio-digestor. After lunch, the canal and national park tour leaves you time to relax before dinner.

The three-night package follows the two-night plan, with the third day free of organized activities. That day can belong to the pool, library or grounds without another scheduled departure. On the final morning of a two- or three-night stay, breakfast is followed by the boat ride to the docks. Continue on the hotel’s San José transfer or meet your arranged onward transfer at a designated location.

National park admission is not included: $15 for adults, $5 for children aged 5–11 and free for younger children. Pay it separately when visiting the park. Choose the package for the exact nights of your stay, with its early starts, included journeys and free time in mind, so that the lodge’s quieter pleasures receive as much attention as the excursions.

What to consider when choosing Mawamba Lodge

  • Choose a stay between water and forest: the canal-and-Caribbean setting, gardens, trails and a coffee room with a put-and-take library reward time left unplanned.
  • Swim at the lodge, not the beach: the pool and whirlpool offer a refreshing pause; beach swimming is prohibited because of riptides and unsafe conditions.
  • Match the room to your comfort needs: Standard and Superior rooms have fans, screened windows and porches; Superior Rooms add space, a king bed and a bathroom hot tub. Adults-only Bungalow categories have air conditioning; confirm their age rule.
  • Select the package by nights: one-, two- and three-night stays include lodging, meals, standard tours and round-trip transport from select San José hotels.
  • Choose the pace of the outings: one night brings a 5:45 am canal tour; two nights add a Mawamba Park visit with butterfly and turtle areas and the bio-digestor, followed by an afternoon canal tour. Three nights add a free third day.
  • Plan the travel day carefully: allow 4–5 hours by road and 1–1.5 hours by boat, with a 25-pound boat luggage allowance. The en-route breakfast stop applies only to the lodge’s provided transport.
  • Pay park admission separately: $15 per adult, $5 for children aged 5–11 and free for younger children. It is excluded from the stay.
  • Keep nesting turtle tours optional: they carry an additional fee and depend on availability. Confirm dates before relying on the end-of-July to beginning-of-August window.
  • Let arrival and departure fit the route: arrival includes buffet lunch, a village visit and a beach-trail return when weather permits. After departure breakfast and the boat ride, use the San José transfer or meet your arranged onward transfer.

The room lacks a sense of privacy. Every word next door can be heard. Louvered windows swing open.

Only complaint was no air conditioner. It rained everyday and our clothes were wet, but impossible to dry with no air conditioner. Loved the hammocks everywhere! Our room was right next to the dock which made for very loud mornings with the boat traffic from the staff shuttles & early morning tours.

Kathryn B.

no A/C, but knew to expect that - no complaints

Lovely setting. Room a little dark. Arrival meal was very good but after the first day there seemed to be less care taken and this was a little disappointing after the great start.

Fantastic place to stay! Staff and property are excellent. The only thing I can think of is it would be nice to have a dedicated bartender at the bar at all times. You could always track one down but sometimes you go to the bar and no one is there to help you.

Beautiful grounds with lots of flowers and iguanas! Plenty of space so we didn't feel crowded. Some reviews on Trip Advisor said people felt like they were herded like cattle. This was NOT our experience. Variety of food was great, staff was helpful with arranging tours. When we received our bungalow assignment, we found we were next door to some very noisy children. We love kids, but felt the noise would have a negative impact on our experience. We voiced our concern to the Lodge staff, who immediately moved us to a bungalow with no neighbors! Super! The boat tour in the jungle was great and the night turtle tour was amazing. We saw a turtle building a nest and another laying eggs! Magical! Our guide was Brian, who was extremely knowledgeable!

Was very uncomfortable with the huge Boa Constrictor right under our room. My wife could not sleep during our whole stay thinking of the snake underneath. There was also so much noise and lack of privacy as there were people coming to see the snake (including hotel staff).

Great food!

Never had any hot water in the bathroom. Floor tiles so textured that they are impossible to clean. BEAUTIFUL landscaping! Beds too firm.

One of my favorite places.

Pradeep K.

fantastic eco lodge. full of wildlife, friendly service. bonus was in house frog pond, butterfly enclosure. plenty of in-house iguanas

Guest review

It was everything you would expect from an isolated eco friendly lodge. No one would expect white tablecloths, silver, and fine china. It met all expectations.
