Golfito, located inside a protected bay down the southwestern coast of Costa Rica, offers excellent fishing and surfing opportunities. A once thriving commercial banana export town deserted in the 1980s, Golfito has reverted back to its more primitive roots and colorful rustic lifestyle. A few comfortable resorts can be found providing an oasis in this remote untamed tropical jungle. North of town, birdwatching enthusiasts will appreciate exploring the wildlife rich Piedras Blancas National Park. Further south beautiful beaches provide some of the best Pacific surfing between April and October. From Golfito, you can take a water taxi over to the Osa Peninsula to visit Corvocado National Park. The town itself extends along the bay with dirt roads and a handful of local restaurants. A small marina supports local liveaboards and world traveling sailors. The most popular activity is sport fishing followed by surfing and hiking in the National Parks.
