Poas Volcano Lodge

Poas Lodge

Good to Know

Poas Volcano Lodge offers a serene mountain escape in Costa Rica's cloud forest, approximately an hour from San Jose airport. This stone lodge, nestled at 6,000 feet, provides gardens, walking trails, and views toward Volcano National Park. Guests can savor local flavors, relax by wood-burning fireplaces, and enjoy a tranquil pace, making it an ideal start or end to a Costa Rica vacation.

A mountain interlude at Poas

At Poas Volcano Lodge, the first or last night of a Costa Rica vacation can become a mountain escape in its own right. About an hour from San Jose airport, the stone lodge sits in cloud forest at roughly 6,000 feet, with gardens, walking trails and views toward Volcano National Park. The cool highlands invite a different pace from the coast: step outside to explore the greenery, then settle beside a wood-burning fireplace as the day turns toward evening. Families and couples can give these hours a place in the vacation, rather than spend them simply waiting for a flight.

Local flavors and rural craft

Coffee farms and strawberry fields are part of the surrounding landscape, where rich volcanic soil supports the produce that reaches the lodge’s table. Strawberries grow here almost year-round. An adjoining dairy farm contributes to the local flavors, too. Complimentary breakfast includes a hot meal, homemade bread and yogurt, freshly churned butter, local strawberries and coffee grown and ground on nearby farms. At dinner, the restaurant’s Chilean sea bass with mango salsa gives you another reason to stay for a meal. Around the lodge, hand-carved furniture made by local artisans and staff drawn largely from the area connect the comforts of the stay with rural Costa Rican life.

An afternoon by the fire

Around 4:30 each afternoon, coffee, tea and homemade cookies draw guests to the comfortable sitting area. The solid stone lodge’s communal rooms make rainy weather or a cool evening easy to enjoy: read in the glass-enclosed library, play pool or chess in the game room, or settle into the theater-style TV room for a movie. These are shared spaces with room for different generations to find their own pause between outings. A bar and room service add options for meals and time indoors, while the fireplaces and locally crafted woodwork give those slower hours their mountain character.

Watch the gardens and cloud forest

Well-marked walking trails lead through the grounds, with bird feeders providing places to pause and look more closely. Flowers, greenery and the surrounding forest keep a morning outdoors connected to the highlands. Resplendent quetzals and other rare tropical birds may be seen here, although the day’s sightings remain a matter of conditions and patience. Complimentary rubber boots are provided for rainy-weather hikes, and binoculars are available to borrow. You can set out for a short walk before breakfast or leave time for the trails after a day away, without making every encounter depend on another excursion.

A cottage feel, with room-specific warmth

Accommodation is spread between the main lodge and separate buildings on the estate. Stone construction, wooden interiors, soft lighting and modern art combine a cottage-like feel with familiar comforts. Every room has either a garden or Volcano National Park view, a private bathroom with a hot shower, a coffee maker and internet access with WiFi. Two larger rooms have fireplaces and sitting areas; the others have space heaters. Choose the room for the outdoor outlook and indoor comforts you want, especially if an evening beside your own fireplace is part of the appeal.

Two different days out

Poas Volcano National Park and La Paz Waterfall Gardens bring contrasting outings within reach of the lodge. At Poas, concrete park trails approach the crater rim; on a clear day, its lake and steaming fumaroles reveal the volcano’s activity. Morning is a useful time to visit before fog gathers, with visibility always dependent on conditions. La Paz combines five cascading waterfalls with tropical flowers, an orchid house, butterfly conservatory, outdoor hummingbird garden, serpentarium and frog pond. Its wildlife refuge also gives you opportunities to see rescued monkeys and indigenous jungle cats. Return afterward for a meal and a warm room, leaving a little space around those outings to enjoy the highlands themselves.

What makes the highland stay worth choosing

  • Make the highlands part of your arrival or farewell: the cloud-forest lodge is about an hour from San Jose airport, with cool weather at roughly 6,000 feet rather than a coastal setting.
  • Let the afternoon unfold beside a wood-burning fireplace: coffee, tea and homemade cookies arrive around 4:30 daily, with a glass-enclosed library, pool tables, chess and movies for time indoors.
  • Walk without leaving the estate: marked trails, gardens and bird feeders invite patient birdwatching. Quetzals may be seen in the surrounding forest; complimentary rubber boots help on rainy walks, and binoculars are available.
  • Start with a complimentary hot breakfast featuring homemade bread and yogurt, butter, local strawberries and coffee; the adjoining dairy farm and nearby farms connect the meals to rural Costa Rica. A bar and room service add options for time at the lodge.
  • Keep an evening for the restaurant’s Chilean sea bass with mango salsa, and notice the locally carved furniture and the community ties that give the lodge its character.
  • Choose your room for views and warmth: rooms look toward gardens or Volcano National Park; two larger rooms have fireplaces and sitting areas, while the others use space heaters. All have private hot showers, coffee makers and internet with Wi-Fi.
  • Pair the stay with Poas Volcano National Park and La Paz Waterfall Gardens. Morning volcano visits help with the fog; La Paz combines five waterfalls with gardens and rescued-wildlife exhibits. Clear views and bird sightings remain dependent on conditions.

Excellent food. Could have been better if it had some better way to heat the room

Loved the hotel!

Brooke P.

Such a lovely, cozy, and serene start to our trip! Beautiful setting and such professional and sweet staff. We loved the rustic cozy cabins.

I love this hotel but the only thing is that we needed a little bit more lighting in the rooms and yes my kids loved the farm life there. All the cows, and the cow milking and the chicken feeding and the peace lodge was beautiful. Love the scene and all the birds around the place. Love nature and everywhere we went.

Despite the nice location, this hotel did not meet our expectations for the following reasons: 1) no TV (except in the basement), no phone (so you could not call reception/front desk) and no fridge/minibar, 2) no dining for lunch, and 3) staff often not at front desk, especially before 8 a.m., and could not make change for dollars or colones. Also no fan in the bathroom. Food was good, though limited options. Great tropical fruits and strawberries. Guide furnished by the hotel for Poas Volcano and La Paz Waterfall Gardens was excellent. Massages were good. At best a 3-star hotel, not a good value for the money.

Lovely private cabins, wonderful staff, interesting reading rooms in the lodge with quaint little wood stoves. Super breakfast and a caring friendly waitress and waiter
