Find your place to stay
Hotel Los Pinos in Monteverde offers private, rustic cabins designed for an independent, self-catering stay amidst the cloud forest. Each bungalow features a stocked kitchenette, a separate living room, and an eating area, providing a home-like experience. Guests can pick fresh vegetables from the on-site garden for a fee and explore trails leading to a rainforest viewpoint. Ideal for travelers seeking privacy, nature immersion, and the flexibility of their own schedule, Los Pinos provides a tranquil base for exploring Monteverde's highlands.
Pick vegetables for dinner, follow a path to a forest viewpoint and return to a cabin with room to cook and relax. Hotel Los Pinos brings an appealing independence to a Monteverde stay. The rustic cabins sit a fair distance apart, giving you a sense of privacy in the greenery, high in the mountainous cloud forest region of Puntarenas.
Los Pinos is featured in National Geographic's Ultimate Journey for Two, but its appeal is easy to understand on its own terms: room to live a little more slowly, trails close at hand and a cabin that feels more like a small home. Open the windows in the morning and enjoy the view of nature before deciding how much of the day to spend away.
Every bungalow has a stocked kitchenette with a microwave, mini-fridge, stove and utensils, along with a separate living room, an eating area and a private bathroom with hot water. You can prepare something simple, take your time over a meal and settle into a shared living space rather than fit the holiday into one conventional hotel room.
The vegetable garden adds a distinctive pleasure to that freedom. Guests can pick vegetables for a small fee and use them in their cabin kitchen. There is no restaurant on the property, but a grocery store, bakery and laundromat are a short walk away. Cooking can become part of enjoying the place, with fresh produce from the grounds and the flexibility to eat on your own schedule.
Children have a playground for those hours between excursions. The on-site trails lead to a viewpoint over the rainforest, a place to enjoy a quiet moment as a couple or share a walk with the family. For a different kind of pause, book a treatment at Diamond Spa at the top of the property. One-bedroom cabins and three-bedroom family options give groups different ways to arrange sleeping and living space.
Monteverde's cooler mountain air and lush greenery frame days in cloud forest and rainforest landscapes. An experienced naturalist can help you look for unusual highland wildlife, including blue butterflies and colorful birds, without needing a particular sighting to make a walk worthwhile. Coffee tours connect the countryside with its farming traditions, while canopy ziplines, horseback riding, ATV trips and canyoning bring more active possibilities.
Come back to the cabin when you are ready for a quieter evening. Los Pinos suits travelers who enjoy outdoor days, privacy and self-catering, with enough time left for the garden, a family meal and the simple pleasure of being at home for a while in Monteverde.

A little dated, but clean and great staff.

This was my very favorite accommodation during the entire trip! I was surprised because we had to swap it into the itinerary and I chose it for its relatively low cost. But I didn't anticipate how wonderful the stay would be. Ana at reception gave us such a warm and informative welcome. She gave us a ride in an electric golf cart to our very spacious cabaña with a fully stocked kitchen, comfortable beds, and massive windows that allowed us to spy on wildlife. There was also a hammock that allowed us to do the same. The grounds were stunning, allowing for manageable hikes through a private cloud forest with wildlife all around us and a stunning view of Golfo de Nicoya. I appreciated the ecological info and values displayed at the property, and that it was walking distance to restaurants and other businesses in town. But it was also convenient for us to buy food at the supermercado and have breakfast in the cabaña. Also, Ana gave us a bonus ride in the golf cart to one of the property's hiking trails, and this really impressed my son!

The hotel Los Pinos is ok. The room was big but not fantastic. The nature around was nice, though.

I did not like the double bed and the problem with base boards with holes in them but it has beautiful surroundings and grounds

An oasis of calm introspection. The trails were beautiful and hypnotizing. My wife and I loved that there was a working hydroponic farm onsite, as well as the coatis, amadillos, and agoutis were very sweet to see. I even got to gently remove a scorpion from under my knapsack! Love the hammock on the porch, plus my kid got to watch his football games on the satellite tv.

Brilliant!

Very nice and friendly staff. Loved the hiking trail to the overlook on the property. Good location for walking to the bakery in the morning. Enjoyed laying in the hammock to enjoy the wildlife.

Overall this was the best place we stayed in Costa Rica. Hotel Los Pinos is a very amazing place. Being so close to the cafe and some eating spots was great. We got up every morning and walked over to the cafe across the street. Our cabin was truly spectacular. We were able to cook at our place, which gave us a few home cooked meals. Must stay place in Costa Rica!

This hotel is SO beautiful and peaceful. It is surrounded by amazing nature. Our cabin was like a house tree, what a beautiful place! We love less crowded places so this was the right place for us! Staff was extremely nice and kind. 10/10. Also loved their more ecological view/service: less plastic bottles, more recycling, awesome!

The hotel set up was quite good with 3 seperate rooms but our room (middle one) did not have a closet only a few hooks for our clothing.

We enjoyed the group cabin. The staff treated us like family. We will have a great story (and no doubt will be exaggerated upon each retelling) about the agouti that saundered into our cabin.

great place not to far from stores and eateries

This is a friendly eco lodge with a great focus on sustainability. If I'm not mistaken there are older and newer lodges on site and we seem to have stayed in one of the older ones which could have benefitted from a makeover. But this is not to say that everything wasn't in perfect working order or that we didn't like it! The hotel is hidden away in the trees on a hill with quite some wildlife coming to the doorstep. We went up to the viewpoint which was very nice and got some salad from the gardens. The hotel is a bit away from the town centre, so if you're not keen to hike up a very steep hill for half an hour after your dinner, your restaurant choices are a bit limited. Also for some of the activities it would have been easier to have a car. However, there is a supermarket in easy walking distance (and a laundry service). We did a super interesting guided nature walk with ‘Johnny loves nature’ which I can thoroughly recommend.

Beds were a little hard. Beautiful landscape with lots of flowers and butterflies.

Keep in mind that there is no heat in the cabins. I understand that is common in the area. Like many tourists, I didn't bring quite enough warm wear for the mountain climate.

The staff was friendly, helpful and informative. The cabin was lovely, clean, every convenience needed, comfortable bed. Enjoyed the grounds, trails, garden, and saw lots of wild life.

Probably my favorite place. The climate was unique for a tropical location, weather was great (rain included!) and the casita was charming, comfortable and cozy. The fireplace was enjoyable as was the free firewood. The Organic garden was amazing and we really enjoyed eating from it. The staff was super helpful and accommodating.

We loved Los Pinos and the staff was so warm and friendly. We hiked to the gardens and bought fresh vegetables for our breakfast- it was delicious.

Los Pinos Cabanas were great! I would definitely recommend the Superior cabins like ours. I don't remember this being on your list, PTW, but it should be. Wonderful, somewhat more rustic experience. Had great lettuce, pepper and tomato salads and beautiful views at the top of the property. The fireplace added wonderful ambiance. The folks here were very nice. Loved the quiet, privacy and green.
This eco-lodge was great. Raphael and Luis were very friendly and helpful. While there is no breakfast included, there is an excellent bakery across the street.
