Good to Know

Rancho Margot offers a distinctive 400-acre self-sufficient farm experience along Lake Arenal, blending tranquil farm life with access to regional adventures. Guests can explore 11 natural waterfalls, rainforest trails, and engage in activities like yoga or cow-milking. Accommodation ranges from private bungalows with terraces and hammocks to dormitory-style bunkhouses, all supported by a restaurant, bar, and warm hospitality. This ecolodge provides a unique stay, connecting travelers with land and community.

Farm life beside Lake Arenal

At Rancho Margot, the farm is part of the holiday. This 400-acre self-sufficient property lies along the shores of Lake Arenal, with 11 natural waterfalls, a river flowing through the ranch from the lake, tropical gardens and rainforest trails. Explore the landscape, look for wildlife or join a cow-milking experience: time on the grounds has its own story, alongside the adventures you plan in Arenal.

Find a slower rhythm on the ranch

Stroll beside the river, follow a rainforest path or give a quieter hour to yoga. You can practice at your own pace or join group sessions led by experienced yogis, while the heated swimming pool offers another way to enjoy a slower day. A restaurant, bar and WiFi keep the practical side of time at the ranch close to hand.

A bungalow with a terrace and hammock

A Bungalow has its own terrace, a view and a hammock, giving the day an inviting place to begin or end. Yoga classes and guided ranch tours are included with the Bungalow stay. A tour can bring the workings of the farm into focus, while the terrace gives you space to enjoy the setting more quietly afterward.

The Bunkhouse offers dormitory-style accommodation, shared bathrooms, hot water and a communal area for socializing. It is a different kind of stay from the more private Bungalow arrangement, so choose with that distinction in mind and confirm availability when arranging your trip.

A regional adventure, then back to the farm

The wider Arenal region adds volcano scenery, canopy zip-lines, whitewater rafting and butterfly gardens. You can set out for those adventures and still keep a day for the ranch, where a walk, a yoga class or time on the terrace makes the accommodation part of the experience. Farm life gives Rancho Margot a character that lasts beyond the day's excursion.

Warm personal hospitality adds a human welcome to the self-sufficient ranch, whether your stay centers on learning about the farm, regional adventure or making time to relax.

The only significant drawback to Rancho Margot (which gets top marks in every other respect) is the long and very rough gravel road to get there. We arrived in the Fortuna area after dark and the road trip in from the paved road seemed to go on forever. A couple of days later, one of our guides said that the guides refer to a place like Rancho Margot -- that is very much off the beaten track -- as "the place where the devil lost his jacket!"
