The small village of Ostional, with its black sand beach on the Nicoya Peninsula, is most famous for hosting thousands of sea turtles that come to shore to lay their eggs. To protect the monthly phenomenon occurring before each new moon, visitors are only allowed to explore the Ostional Wildlife Reserve with a licensed tour guide. Nearby hotels provide excellent beaches for swimming, surfing, and other ocean adventures. A four-star hotel with ultra modern furnishings found at Playa Azul, seven miles north, features direct beach access. Individual boutique style bungalows are within a half mile of the Reserve. Both provide spa services and can arrange for turtle tours. For year-round road access, come directly from the town of Santa Cruz, not from nearby Nosara, due to often impassable road conditions. Flights into Nosara can connect with 4-wheel drive transport into Ostional.
