Santa Juana Lodge

Santa Juana

Good to Know

Ridge-top terraces look across rainforest toward the distant Pacific at Santa Juana Lodge, about an hour inland from Quepos. Local families prepare traditional meals, and community-led tours explore coffee, sugarcane, forest trails and waterfalls. Rustic accommodation invites slower days; seasonal road conditions may require four-wheel drive, and internet and television facilities vary by category.

Terrace views and rural life above the rainforest

Rocking chairs on a terrace invite you to look across the rainforest toward the distant Pacific. At Santa Juana Lodge, about an hour inland from Quepos, that view can be reason enough to leave the afternoon open. Rustic accommodation on a ridge brings you close to a small rural community, where local people prepare traditional meals and share the landscape they call home.

A cabin open to the landscape

The mountain air and ridge-top outlook draw you outside, but the view can remain part of the day even when you stay in. From a couch, a rocking chair on the private terrace or bed in the morning, you can watch the weather change across the rainforest and the Pacific in the distance. Sunsets and birds moving through the landscape bring different reasons to pause; toucans and seabirds are among the birds seen around the slopes, without a sighting being part of every stay.

The cabin experience is rustic and naturally ventilated, with large screened windows, ceiling fans and a side that can open toward the terrace. A kitchenette with refrigerator, stove, microwave and coffee maker gives you some independence between the traditional meals. A monitor, DVD player and family-friendly film library are available, so a quiet evening need not be an empty one. If you need internet or television, confirm the chosen accommodation rather than counting on those facilities throughout the lodge.

Rural life, shared with you

Santa Juana began as a private organic farm, then grew into rural tourism through local involvement. In 2017, the community had around 50 residents and only five pupils in its school, with young adults leaving to find work elsewhere. Sharing rural knowledge through tourism brought work closer to home and helped families remain together in the community. All lodge and tour service providers are townspeople. Local Greentique-certified guides share the countryside’s natural and cultural life, while a local family prepares and serves traditional meals three times a day. Confirm the meals included in your booked arrangement when planning your stay.

Follow a trail, learn something new

Nature trails, rivers, waterfalls and swimming and fishing holes surround the lodge, giving you places to explore on your own as well as with a guide. The countryside is part of everyday life here; taking time to walk through it lets a rural stay become more than a view from the terrace.

A cultural outing can show you how coffee is produced or how oxen power traditional sugarcane milling. Identify tropical garden flowers with a guide, follow a wet-forest trail or join a birdwatching expedition. Local ziplining uses eco platforms designed to protect the trees, and tilapia fishing offers another activity connected to the rural surroundings. Most tours leave an opportunity for a dip in a natural waterfall pool, giving an active day a refreshing pause.

Plan the journey to the ridge

The small access road may require four-wheel drive in certain seasons. Secure parking and transportation from Manuel Antonio can be arranged; the closest domestic airport is in Quepos.

Santa Juana encourages a stay shaped by the view, the trails and the people you meet. Give yourself time for a guided outing, a meal and a return to the terrace as the landscape changes around you.

Highlights to help you choose

  • A ridge above the rainforest gives the rustic accommodation a panoramic outlook toward the distant Pacific. Choose Santa Juana when terrace time, changing weather and a mountain setting are part of the vacation you want.
  • The lodge grew from an organic farm through local involvement. Townspeople provide the lodge and tour services, so the stay connects meals and guided experiences to the surrounding rural community.
  • Traditional meals are cooked and served by a local family three times a day. Plan around that rhythm and confirm which meals are included in your booked arrangement rather than assuming every rate is all-inclusive.
  • Trails, rivers, waterfalls and swimming and fishing holes give you places to explore. Walk independently or join a local Greentique-certified guide for interpretation and a closer look at the landscape.
  • Coffee production, oxen-powered sugarcane milling, tropical flower identification and birdwatching add cultural and natural-history interest; wet-forest hikes, eco-platform ziplining and tilapia fishing bring more active choices.
  • Screened windows and ceiling fans naturally ventilate the cabins, and opening sides connect interiors to private terraces. Kitchenettes, rocking chairs and a DVD/monitor film library make slower hours appealing too.
  • Internet and television facilities differ among accommodation categories. Confirm what your chosen unit provides if staying connected is essential; the rustic lodge experience should not be booked on an assumption of universal connectivity.
  • The road may require four-wheel drive in some seasons. Secure parking and transportation from Manuel Antonio can be arranged, and the nearest domestic airport is in Quepos; arranged transport is not a promise of a complimentary transfer.
  • About an hour inland from Quepos, Santa Juana suits a traveler willing to give a rural stay its own time. Let guided experiences, local meals and the terrace view take priority over a tightly packed city or beach itinerary.

Wonderful. We saw about a dozen species of birds just from the platform around the dining area. The staff were spectacular - warm, knowledgeable, and helpful. The restaurant staff learned our favorites (hot chocolate and soursop juice) and delivered them with a grin. Our own "cabin" was spacious and well thought-out. The view was uninterrupted all the way to the Pacific Ocean. Temperature dropped at night but warm blankets. I would definitively return if the circumstances allowed.

This hotel is a treasure and it was very difficult to leave. My family was so well taken care of, the food was delicious, the staff wonderful and the lodge and preserve itself is nothing short of breathtaking. Anyone who loves nature, adventure, peace needs to stay here. I really can't say enough about it. It is a piece of heaven.
