Our favorite lodging on this trip. We liked the more private with less features aspect. It allowed us to relax more than other lodging locations.
Find your place to stay
Tenorio Lodge offers a nature-immersed escape in Bijagua, set within a private rainforest reserve near Tenorio Volcano National Park and Rio Celeste. Guests can enjoy guided forest walks, birdwatching, and rustic bungalows featuring modern comforts and serene rainforest or garden views. While breakfast highlights local ingredients, guests should plan other meals in advance, as lunch is currently unavailable and dinner is not served in low season. This 3-star eco-style lodge provides a remote, tranquil base for exploring Costa Rica's natural wonders.
Forest walks and the prospect of Rio Celeste’s turquoise waterfall give a stay at Tenorio Lodge a clear sense of direction. In Bijagua, the private-reserve setting brings the rainforest into time around your outings, with guided nature walks and birdwatching providing ways to notice more of the flora and fauna. You can give the national park a day of its own and still leave an afternoon for the quieter pleasures of the lodge.
Rustic rooms combine natural character with modern comforts, with rainforest or garden outlooks in some accommodation. A bungalow’s fan, coffee service, mini-fridge and sitting area make it a practical place to settle after a walk. Hammocks and seating areas invite you to open a book or listen to the surroundings rather than immediately set off again. The lodge’s environmental approach complements a stay spent exploring its own reserve as well as the national park.
Breakfast brings fresh, locally sourced ingredients to the table, including fruit and vegetables, in a tranquil setting. Other meals require a little planning: lunch is unavailable until further notice, and neither lunch nor dinner is served in low season. The bar opens every day from 1:00 pm to 9:00 pm, providing an afternoon or evening drink option. Arrange your other meals before arrival so the dining schedule works comfortably with your outings.
The entrance to Tenorio Volcano National Park is nearby, making Rio Celeste and its waterfall a natural focus for a day beyond the reserve. Staff can help arrange tours and activities in the surrounding area. Choose around the room outlook you want, and confirm the swimming-pool and Jacuzzi facilities if water-based relaxation is important to your stay. Then give the forest, hammocks and guided walks their own room in the itinerary, rather than treating Bijagua only as a brief stop at the waterfall.

We loved everything about Tenoiro Lodge and it was the type of accommodation that we prefer.

Very isolated. Needed a taxi to get to Bijagua, which wasn’t too far away but not walkable on a busy road with walking paths or sidewalks. The staff at the Lodge was exceptional.

Rated high, but mixed review for the following reasons: 1. All four of us in one bungalow, but the bungalow had only one bedroom, not two, so all four of us crammed in together. 2. All bathroom noises and activities heard by all at all times given open layout. 3. Without a car you are captive to the Lodge - no where to go unless you walk the 2.6 miles in to "town" and 2.6 miles back (like we did for something to eat other than the lodge food). 4. Given that all we did was the 3 hour Celeste River hike, spending 2 full days here was a bit unnecessary. Would not recommend a second night for our itinerary. 5. No internet or wireless, so we were completely unplugged for two days. Not saying that was a bad thing, but one result was that they only accepted cash, no credit card. Note: the weather here appears to be perpetually horrible. Clouds, rain, fog and howling winds at night, the whole time. Not a negative comment - just an observation. Despite all the above, the lodge is very nice and comfortable. Very clean and everything worked (but internet). The owners are also very nice and took good care of us. Food was good and place is clean and well maintained. For us, being away from everything for two days was OK, but may be for everyone.
Excellent. Loved the trails around the lodge, excellent food, kind and wonderful staff and owners, beautiful accommodations, excellent food. Everyone was very kind using three the language mix of Franco-Spanglish. I would stay here again.
