Good to Know

The Spider Monkey Canyon half-day tour offers an exhilarating exploration of the rainforest near Arenal Volcano, combining rappelling, jungle hiking, hanging bridge crossings, and zip-lining. Participants descend a cliff into a shallow river, traverse the jungle with panoramic views, and fly through the canopy. This triple-action adventure includes professional guides, all necessary equipment, and a hearty lunch, providing a comprehensive Costa Rican experience. The tour concludes with a scenic hike through Rio Arenal before returning to headquarters for refreshments.

Brace yourself for an unforgettable adventure on the Spider Monkey Canyon tour…Imagine hiking into a canyon with scenic waterfalls near the Arenal volcano, rappelling down the face of a cliff, crossing overhanging bridges, zip-lining freely through the rain forest and sloshing along in a river all in just a half-day tour!

The day starts when you are picked up from your hotel and brought to your tour’s rappelling/zip-lining headquarters located between Lake Arenal and Arenal Volcano. Once you arrive your professional guide will size you up so you can suit up with the latest safety gear. Your guide will then provide operational and safety instructions as you familiarize yourself with the equipment.

The walk down to the canyon is brief but surrounded by beauty. Once you arrive, your guide will secure the ropes so you can begin rappelling by descending over the face of a cliff into a shallow river below. This is sure to get your adrenaline pumping! No worries though, a second guide will be positioned at the base, controlling a secondary safety line at all times.

Once you gain your bearings you will continue through the jungle until you reach the hanging bridges offering great views of the rain forest. Your experienced guide will likely alert you to any birds, reptiles or other wildlife that may be visible from your elevated vantage point as you walk over the hanging bridges taking in the magnificent view.

Next your guide will show you how to operate the zip line equipment safely attached to steel cables where you’ll learn to lean forward and fly through the forest canopy with ease. Zip lining and repelling is the ultimate Costa Rican experience and you’ll have the opportunity to do both in this tour.

Finally you will hike through the scenic Rio Arenal where you can cool your heels before hiking back up to the top of the canyon along a well-groomed trail. The hike up requires that you be in reasonably good physical condition.

You will really appreciate the hearty lunch provided after a day of exciting, energetic activities. There is a changing room available where you can change into dry clothes after the tour. Depending on the distance to your hotel, the included transportation can take from 15 minutes to almost an hour each way. NOTE: Closed annually on the Friday before Easter for one day.

This tour is the perfect way to participate in several canopy activities at once with the added advantage of hiking next to the awe-inspiring Arenal Volcano.
